ID request - What's this?
    #11228915 - 10/11/09 07:25 PM (14 years, 5 months ago)

Habitat:
Wood debris and leaf litter near park grass margin, Seattle east area

Cap:
.5 to 2.5cm, reddish brown, hygrophanous drying to golden brown, umbonate, obvious cortinate partial veil.

Gills:
Brown, pretty concolorous with the cap. Attachment clearly sinuate.

Stem:
Fragile, flexible to a degree but breaking at 90 degrees. Darkening to dark golden brown with age. Fibrillous annulus is also dusted with spores, see pic.

Spore print color:
I'd say that's brown to rusty brown if I had to bet on it, but I suck at this. See veil and annulus in pictures.

Bruising:
Not observed

Cortinarius sp.  I would bet.

These are pretty nifty:

Never seen anything quite like them. No gills whatsoever. I haven't researched yet, maybe they're edible...I know where to find about a billion

Possibly Morganella pyriformis (also known as Lycoperdon pyriforme)

Good call. That's the best I can come up with, also, but I don't completely agree - for instance, Kuo and Wiki both have it with scales and/or spines, and growing on wood. These were on soil/grass near a certain kind of bush only, hundreds of them, and all the fruitbody surfaces were smooth. I have more pics of lesser quality also.

If it doesn't have gills, I don't mean to sound like a noob, but how does it reproduce?

I've also looked at comparisons to Scleroderma verrucosum

I'm pretty sure those in particular develop spores internally.  As the fungus matures a hole will form at the top where spores are visibly dispersed when the fungus is struck i.e. by rain drops... or terribly childlike mushrooms hunters.
