Is this hen of the woods?

If so, does it look like it's in good shape to eat?

And any suggestions for preparation?

That is the hen, it is for eating, send it to me for the preparation.

saute or steam, add to stuff, goes well with just about anything, tastes like steak

I was 99% sure. Just never found them before.

I read that they sometimes pop up in the same spot if you check the next year, around the same time.

Yep, they come back to the same spot, year after year, sometimes they skip a year or two, enjoy.
