Nationwide temp agencies can get you some good part time, or temp-to-hire gigs. Smaller temp agencies, and temp agencies that focus on manual labor.... not such a good experience. Either there was no work (small agency) or everyone was cracked out/drunk all the time ("labor ready" type places).

i had 2-3 jobs for a smaller temp place. they can get you a decent temp job u just need skillz. otherwise it's manual labor. but hey, it's work.

I think OMR got pretty consistent work with google through a temp agency.

I ended up working in a few offices, for a dot-com startup, doing warehouse inventory / misc jobs at a dept store, selling merch at a broadway show... the work varied. the pay was usually ok. anywhere from $10-14/hr (it was in western washington - decent pay)

I have gone through several temp agencies (mainly because the factories started hiring only temps) and IMO they SUCK

One company I was working for, I was a temp for 18 months :dudewtf:
I even got a promotion while I was a temp

About 70% of the workers there were temps

It was their way of not having to pay health insurance

I think the idea of a temp agency is a good one
it is just too easy for employers to take advantage of them

My expidrence with adecco sucked ass!!! I worked for three months bust n my ass for grainger threw them taking nventory on every lil thing there (a whole warehouse full of shit) and after that they said ok we don't need u ne more. The shitty part about it was it was adecco who called me and told me not to go back with reason why. I couldn't even go back to get my things. Alll and all I felt that they used me for the 90 days for inventory then after that they fired me so that they could have workers that they can just use then they throw u away like a piece of trash! My opinion don't waste ur time!

Here's a perspective you guys might not have expected:

My family owned a staffing firm for 30 years and I've worked for a large corporate firm for about a year before being laid off.

Staffing firms can be a great benefit depending on what you're looking for. There is, however, a crucial difference between a staffing firm and a head hunter. A head hunter is someone you pay to find you a position. He's usually someone who knows a lot about companies and has excellent connections and will basically promote you to companies as if you're a product for sale.

A Staffing firm can put you to work on three different types of arrangements; Permanent/Direct Hire, Temp-to-Hire, and Temp.

All of these working arrangements can be full time or part time.

If you're out of work or got laid off/fired, my advice is to revise your resume and reach out to every single staffing company you can get your hands on. They'll be looking to place you while you're out looking for work on your own. Most recruiters get a commission and will try their best to place you--but keep in mind they're not head hunters. If they find someone better, you're shit out of luck.

Companies--not the staffing firm but their clients--benefit from employing temps. There is reduced risk that stems from
  • reduced expenses (health care, benefits, etc)
  • workers compensation
  • unemployment tax

So companies really benefit from hiring slav--er "temps".

Not ALL temps are without health benefits. There ARE staffing companies who offer health insurance but it's garbage.

I've placed a couple high profile candidates at large companies. They were temp-to-perm which really isn't much different from a direct hire position. A lot of people fear the word 'temp' but if you think about it--being hired directly isn't much different. If you fuck up on the job or can't handle it...they're not going to keep you. Your ass is grass. PERIOD.

Additionally, there is ONE real negative aspect of working with staffing companies that you should be aware of.

If you are looking for work, they might BLAST your resume to a shitload of companies. These companies are going to have to pay a FEE for you to be hired. So lets say you are working with a staffing company and then you find a job opening at XYZ company. You apply on your own, but they turn around and say your staffing company already applied for you. Sorry.

XYZ company MAY have hired you if they didn't have to pay a fee for you. Like if you're a newbie and just starting your career. Face it, you're a dime a dozen and they shouldn't have to pay for someone that will probably walk in the door.

So that's the only real negative side of things. If you're on the hunt for a career because you're unemployed...keep track of what companies you've applied to and make sure you set the staffing company straight if you're going to work with them:

"I want to know what companies you've submitted my resume to so I can keep record so I don't apply there on my own."

They may fight you on this, saying they won't do it because it's a confidential opening or they don't give the name of the business out because competition can infiltrate the account. This is true, however they should have NO problem telling you after you've already been submitted.

Staffing firms are AWESOME if you're already working and are just passively looking. Lets say you're content with the job you have. Talk to a staffing company for shits if you want to make more money. They may find an opportunity for you and you could end up getting a raise.

However in this economy it's doubtful. Food for thought.

I hate Adecco. If it was a temp to perm position...maybe you fucked up. Did you show up on time? Bitch about needing a day off? Fuck up your inventory count or anything? These types of fuck ups will get your ass dismissed almost immediately.

I think it is far too easy for a company to take advantage of the 'temp worker'

I understand the desire to 'try it before you buy it' attitude

but a company should hire the employee after 3 months if there are no issues with them

I guess...but that's not capitalism. And who is taking advantage? No one has a gun to anyones head. Many companies DO hire after 90 days. I took a 2 week temp assignment and I was hired permanently because they liked my work ethic and leadership abilities.

But you can bet your ass I spent every day looking for a permanent position. Even in a shitty economy there ARE openings. Just gotta find em thats all. Always keep your eye out for another opportunity.

Temp agency I used to work for offered health insurance, but I'm hired on now 12.17 an hour plus shift premium, free health insurance, double time on Sundays and 25 cent raise every year.  I always thought temp agencies where usually for places that had people quit often and it was just easier to find people through them without hassle.
