does this look ok?
    #11226724 - 10/11/09 03:47 PM (8 years, 11 days ago)

this is my first attempt at a grow and im not sure if this looks ok or not. i inoculated about two weeks ago and just saw white myc within the last few days. before that... well im not sure if it was contam or not but the rest of the jar has something that is the same color as the verm but i think it looks a little fuzzy. i took some pics with my phone but i might be able to take better ones tomorow. ill post them in a few min.

edit:
myc:

empty/ verm colored fuzz:

any thoughts?

Pics are a bit blurry. It looks a little bit green but that could be the poor quality of the picture.

Does it look wet? Is there a contam that discolored the myc? Does it smell?

i think its more brown than green and ...idk it could be wet but not to the point where you can see any water. and i cant smell anything through the jar.

Open the lid and take a whiff.

Also, if I were you I would look at the jars suspected of contams, separate them from your other jars, and watch them carefully. If it's a contam it will spread. If it's white, or ropey, it's mycelium and you'll be fine.

I was nervous like you and I inspect my jars EVERY day, sometimes twice a day. I think you'll find that the PF tek is almost idiot proof. I broke a lot of the rules and (knock on keyboard) I haven't yet encountered a contam with my jars.

Again, if you're in doubt, just quarantine that fucker and watch. Contams spread and may have an odor. All of my jars smells like fresh mushrooms.

Keep them in lower temps like 70-75 until they've colonized much of the jar (50%-75%) and then keep them in a 75-80 degree incubation temps to speed the process up a little. Works great for me! 12 hours 70-75, 12 hours 77-80. Cooler temps will reduce contam risk.

Looks like healthy rhizomorphic growth to me, but the pictures are blurry. I wouldn't recommend opening your jars - you might disturb the dry verm barrier.

does sterility matter at this point? i thought it still did; thats why i haven't opened them yet.
as for the brownish stuff, they all look the same so i'm not worried too much about spreading.
i cut a few conners too. they definitely haven't been in optimal growing temperatures so far but the whole op is getting moved to a new location tomorrow so i am going to take better care of them there. i think the temp is the reason they took so long to show this much growth.

You still want to be as sterile as possible just for the sake of it. I put all of my jars in a tupperware box and move them into the different temp areas. Disturbing the verm barrier isn't that big of a deal plus if you did a good job, you shoulda packed verm all the way to the top and sealed the lid so you CAN'T shake it around.

Get those puppies into 70-75 degree temps so they can colonize with less competition and then move them into 75-80 degree temps once they have a better stronghold on the jars.
