Bulk and the room required
    #11226545 - 10/11/09 03:05 PM (8 years, 13 days ago)

Hello, I'd like to try to get into bulk substrates or grain. I'm wondering if this would be possible with minimal space. I read that with grain, you can't fruit straight off of the cake, like with PF cakes. I don't want to fill a tub up with hpoo or anything like that, I don't really have the room. So would it be a better option to go the route of grain in say a 1 pint jar and case it and fruit it in a small tray or something, or would I be better off just going with the PF tek a bit longer until I decide to clear some space?

How much room do you have? 4-tier greenhouse ok?

You can make a SG FC and throw bulk trays in there, with bulk you can control the size / depth of trays. You could also make a smaller monotub or a dub tub. You've got a lot of options.

Gee, thank you all for the suggestions. To be honest, I didn't know I had these many space saving options with bulk. I'll have to read over a few and perhaps harness some of my own creativity, which is always fun. I will look into what you have recommended, and if you have any other recommendations for a grow setup with my type of situation, I'd love to hear it.

I have a "SG mono" too,, but seriously, that thing was awesome...I didn't even have to mist mine and I fanned it maybe once a day, if that. I only had two rows of holes on two sides and maybe 4 or 5 holes on the two other sides. I didn't put any holes in the top or bottom.

Now I've changed it so that it has more SG style holes and 3 holes on the top, we'll see how it does...

If you want a simple bulk sub cubensis project you could spawn some grains into your bulk choice and layer a few inches in a 5gallon bucket.  Use a piece or two of plastic to cover the top.  I've done this without holes, and without a casing layer, misted minimally and still easily gotten a dry oz. before i threw the project out.  I would fan by putting my finger inbetween the two overlapping pieces of plastic and pushing them up and down to force air in and out.  When i decided the sub needed misting i would tear the plastic off and replace it after misting.  So easy. ~P~

P. Cubensis Bulk Substrate:
Coco-Coir (and/or local Horse Manure), Vermiculite, Gypsum (calcium sulfate), Composted Chicken Manure (3%-5%).

Thanks, that's a good idea. The fruiting chamber I used for my first PF tek grow was a little like that. I had a large bucket with perlite at the bottom and I had my cakes sit in it and I put a grocery bag over the top. This was after I transported them out of a shotgun terranium and they did much better. I just took the bag off and misted and fanned. I hadn't heard of anyone else doing it but I figured it was probably done a lot.

So yeah, that sounds like it could be something I would have fun doing. Thanks.

6qt sterilite containers (shoebox size) make good double tubs that are space efficient.
