Is my monotub contamed?

I just took a peek at my monotub that is on day 11 of colonization, it's about 20% covering the top as of now. One thing I noticed was what looked like about inch long white dog hairs growing out of the myc in sporatic spots. It's tough to get a pic because the tub is full of condensation and I don't want to open the lid yet. Anyone know what is going on?

I don't think (this far in anyways) that it will matter if you quickly open it up to snap a picture, thus getting better advice for your problem. Make sure the air is clean if you go that route.

That is a good sign. Be patient and let it colonize. Depending of size of tub/substrate depth/etc..., monotubs generally take longer to colonize. But patience is a virtue. Wait until its at least 95% colonized and fruit. Good Luck.

you'll be ok to snap a shot.. the long white "hairs" you speak of, as I imagine, can be found in a few healthy grows.. but pics for the best advice. Do a little air spray if you are concerned.. but keep in mind.. at 11 days, you are over the colonization hump, IMO, and a quick release of the lid should be fine. But, if you know you shouldn't open it (because you are the one who is there), then just hang on to it, let it play out, until you feel you should/can inspect closer.

well.. I have never seen that myself.. In my opinion, I would continue on. It looks like the myc is taking just fine. Assuming the myc is taking over faster then the sprouts (if that is what they are), I think you have a good chance that the myc will eat it and grow out just fine. I would continue on, unless you have someone with experience in this phenomenon post a better answer. I would almost ponder picking it.. not sure..?

That is exactly what it is.
Probably from improperly prepared (undercooked) grain or residual seedlings from a bulk substrate lacking pasteurization.
Just leave them alone. They won't hurt much. Picking them out wouldn't be worth the effort, and you'd just be adding another vector for contamination.

I have had that happen before but should not cause a problem.. I had a couple seed sprouts and had green little stalks growing in my mono tubs.. No worse for the wear though..

Your sub looks a little chunky. Try breaking it up better next time and you will get more even colonization. Myc loves airy substrates.
Check it out.

Yeah thanks for the advise, it was tough to break up the cow poop by hand. I'll break it up a lot better for my next monotub EQ!

That sounds like your bulk may be too wet. Was your bulk at field capacity when you spawned to bulk?

Yes it was, I thought condensation is normal at this point?

Nothing in your statement there gives any indication of how wet your substrate is. However, a drier substrate would crumble more like the picture I put up, as compared to yours, which looks wet and packed together. It looks good though, and it's working for you. I'm not trying to criticize you, just want to share some tips for next time.
Lots of condensation is normal. Careful when taking the lid off, all that water will drip down on your substrate and you'll have to manually pad up the excess water.
