Help me root my lil' cactus
    #11225702 - 10/11/09 11:43 AM (8 years, 1 month ago)

Just received a pedro cutting from a member and realized that I don't know the best coarse of action to take.

I've searched for tek's on rooting and found this:

A couple posts regarding dry rooting in soil.

Allowing the roots to form with cactus in open air.

A couple different posts that say to lightly mist the soil to make up for cactus dehydrating.

Don't know which one to follow.

Any links or advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks

D

Dont put water anywhere near it until it has good roots.

open air is the best
in dry soil the cactus can still put out moisture through the callous and that leads to mold.  It can work and I have done it but it can also fail just as easy.

So just prop it up against a wall or what?

i just put mine in a bucket.  Prop it upright until the callous forms to about 10-20; place in dry soil and ensure that the guy can stand up; hold off watering for several weeks after you've potted to soil.

regular potting soil. pot. stick in the dirt and leave it in a shady place. then just wait for roots. use a stake to prop i up if you need to. its not really complicated.

I've always shoved mine in my cactus soil garden and watered right away... I've never once worried about waiting for roots to form first, and all of my cacti have turned out wonderfully... It's definitely not complicated. I would say even less complicated than you guys are making it sound. Just shove the fucker in the ground and water as normal... lol... it's always worked for me... A lot of ppl don't realize it, but Trichocereus cacti will even grow thrown sideways on the ground.... (I have proof) check this out.... Trichocereus Log-Grown!

Interesting, I had no idea it would just take root like that, good to know for sure.

To do this you'd probably need both well-draining soil and warm dry weather to have 'no worries' :P.
Watering before it's rooted is unnecessary and an invitation for rot / other nasties.

There is no reason to add water to the soil before it roots.

The cactus has no way of taking in the water, and it just sits there in wet soil.

It really doesn't help the cactus send out roots any quicker either.

I put a loph cutting on some moist peat moss and perlite and put that under a heat mat and it had roots within a couple of weeks. i've never tried it with a pedro but i don't see why it wouldn't work.

I'd like to know how long it normally takes to grow roots, if this is a quicker process or what? I would think that it would do just fine indoors or outdoors in the shade, Idk though, still a cacti noob.
