(More) Fun with Oyster LC and Palm Trees
    #11225676 - 10/11/09 11:34 AM (8 years, 1 month ago)

Inoculating a whole coconut:

1cc total of Pearl Oyster LC injected into the meat in one location, and into the center. Myc is growing out of the center and is about 50% around the surface of the coconut. Found that leaving the coconut dryer is a much better plan as opposed to my previous attempts (leading to contams).

Palm Fronds as spawn material:

Taking forever, but working. Palm fronds and verm, pc'd, and 1cc of pearl oyster spawn @ week 3.

Wow that actually surprises me. I know coconuts are liginous(s.p.) but they also have that meaty inside.

I have a feeling it will do just fine.

Cool innovative grow. Did you pc it?

+5 shrooms for doing something new!

Thanks.. This coconut was old and dried out. The meat had gone away some time ago. What happens is, the end that was attached to the tree opens up to the now hollow core (a small gap). I used this hole to fill it with water and let it soak for an hour. On my previous attempts I saturated it in a bucket for hours, then drained for a couple hours.. but once bagged it was still way too wet. This one, after it sat for an hour I turned it over and drained it for an hour, then I messaged the outer shell with water under the faucet directly before dropping it in the bag. I pc'd the bag for 3 hrs at 15psi.. I accordion folded the top and used to rubber bands to hold it down. I had also drilled a 1/2" hole into the side, to the core. I used this hole to noc it up. 1/2 cc into the hole, and 1/2 cc at an angle into the meat. At this point, myc has grown from that drilled hole, and the natural occurring hole at the one end. This tells me the inner core as colonized.

I used the last of the LC I had for this.. have to make more anyway. I have already done what you suggest.. it got contamed, but recovered.. it never colonized the whole shell.. just the wbs stuffed into it here .. however that wasn't a wood lover either, so maybe it would be different with oysters.. don't know yet.

Update:

Super slow colonization..

But..

At least I know if all else fails, I can spawn directly to palm fronds (almost 100%)

The coconut is also very slow, it is also looking pretty dry.. will still have to adjust water content. It is about 70% colonized, no contams. I think I will give it a dunk before I fruit it.

That bag of palm fronds is about 100% and the coconut is about 95%.. giving them both one more week. No contams.. looks great, just real slow.

I have been experimenting with alfalfa hay, and compared to my normal mix of bagasse and corn meal it is flying at least 10-15% faster, maybe if you can get some you could try that with your palm fronds.

Just be careful it is high in nitrogen and a bit prone to contaminants.

The all frond one started pinning in the bag, I just cut the bag open and set it out back.. going to fruit the coconut soon.

So here is the Palm Frond Spawn bag:

It fruited one big ass oyster.. and that is all.

The Coconut:

Here's the thing with the coconut.. It 100% colonized the outer shell with myc. I put it in the GH and the myc thinned out. After about a month in the FC the myc is starting to thicken.. still no contams.
So, we are still waiting for a result, but I can say... I hope you have time if going this route:

Hate to bring back an old thread - but really curious how the coconut worked out for you?
