removing the cake
    #1111392 - 12/04/02 07:59 PM (21 years, 3 months ago)

well i know im a dumbass for doing this but i was limited on supplies.  i made a brf cake in a 6oz jar.  the only problem with this jar is that it is not tappered.  i know this will be a problem but the mouth of the jar does not curve in too severly. do you think i could just break the jar or would this break the cake? and if the cake happenes to break in half will this ruin it?

I would break the cake up when it is fully colonized to get it out of the jar and then case it, but thats just me. I suppose you could just break the jar.

I used non tapered half pint jars and had little to no trouble getting my cakes to come out.

You don't have to break your jars - when they're fully colonised, wait a week then scrape off the dry verm with a sterile fork.

Then use a sterile spoon to get chunks out, and stick these in a small tub, covered with wet vermiculite. Ta-daa! you're 'casing'!

In a few days it'll start to look colonised again, then when it's mostly white, stick the tub in a humid environment in the light. Pins in a week, harvest a week after that.

You'll probably get about 20 mushrooms per 1/2 pint jar.

with 12 half pint jars, what would you say a good yield is? like I plan on making a couple small casings, and I hear you can get 6 dry grams a cake? I dunno, I don't want to get my hopes to high you know. I figure it would be after 2 flushes or something. 12 x 6 is 72. I don't think I would get that much, maybe after two or more flushes, if everything goes well. What do you guys think? I'm just wondering an approximation.
