preparing for my first grow, vermiculite
    #11222587 - 10/10/09 08:50 PM (8 years, 1 month ago)

In the next couple of days I am going to have everything I need to get started with my first cubensis grow, Except for two things I might need, vermiculite and agar. I'm probably going to try my first time without agar since there seems to be a chance that the spores might not be contaminated, but I can't seem to find any solid information about whether or not vermiculite is needed for a good colonization.

also when i make a filter out of synthetic pillow stuffing should i just fill the top 1/4 inch or so of the jar with it?

What would you be using in lieu of verm? Are you casing or are you making cakes?

Cakes: I don't know of anything that would hold together as well as verm.

Casing: Coir.

Now since you're asking about using pillow stuffing, I'm assuming you're using grain. You won't want to "fill" with the stuffing. Enough to plug the gas exchange area is enough.

You shouldn't need agar for getting started, unless you're planning to dive straight in to strain isolation and such.  Whether you need verm depends on what methods you're using.  Describe your plans a bit.

If you're using polyfill as a filter, just make a 1/4 inch hole in your jar lid and stuff enough through it to fit snuggly.  No filling the whole top of the jar with it.

i was gonna try ryegrass seed the first time. i only know how to do cakes. I'm getting prints in the mail for three species

Pcu Quila is Psilocybe cubensis from Quila
P zapotecorum Tonila
P caerulescens Tonila

I have jars, a large pot, a syringe, and a home-made glove box (pretty nifty)

I have a little time after inoculation to learn about grow chambers and make one of those, right?

i dont know much about growing mushrooms but all these different methods and tons of reading is really giving me a headache. any suggestions would be appreciated. thanks for the filter tips

coir for the substrate or the casing ? cus don't put coir in your casing.

EDIT: oh and if your spore are from indoor mushroom they are suposed to be sterile, if they come from an outside specimen it will need some agar work to clean it.

and if you are planing to fruit them as a cake, don't use rye grass seed, use brf/verm as the pf-tek meant to be!

i'll try brf next.

the cubensis spores might be contaminated so id rather not invest, and i already have psilocybes to last me all year so if i dont get fruits the first time it wont be a huge deal

what are some other methods that have worked for you guys? if i did use ryegrass seed, would i need verm like brf cakes?

Yeah, you'll have a few weeks after inoculation to get your fruiting chamber ready.

You'll need a pressure cooker to sterilize rye.  If all you have for sterilizing is a pot, you'll have to stick with pf cakes, and you'll need verm for them.    This link will fully inform you of the pf method.

If you used rye grass seed, no, you wouldn't need verm as you would for pf cakes.

Personally I like using rye kernels (not grass seed) and growing them out in bulk.

True that for the pc.

And btw you won't need verm if you are going with rye. And I HIGHLY suggest you to use your rye cake to spawn some bulk sub, cus rye alone make a poor substrate.

Nope.  Horse poop need only be pasteurized, not sterilized, which entails heating it between 140-160 F for an hour.  Your pot will do for this job.

First grow + agar = mad fail, unless you have some mad biology lab skillz already.

As a new grower, almost everything that I've made up to this point I've found that I can do it better using other methods or I just don't like the way something has turned out. Hating a glove box is tough, specially when you're doing agar.

Start with grains or PF, make a glove box and try your hand at a few syringes. Shouldn't be too tough, but agar isn't exactly forgiving.

2-4 weeks, usually.

While I am not sure of rye grass as a sub for cubes, it is reportadly quite handy for sclerotia forming species (see the link in my sig). If you can get WBS, its dirt cheap and fairly easy.

I had to find out the hard way that lowes/homedepot/ace wardware doesn't sell vermiculite in my area.  May want to search their homepages to see if they have it in stock in your area.  Local gardens and nurserys seem to always carry it though.

Mine is cumbersome enough that doing G2G is irritating. I can't immagine trying to do sector transfers in it. Seriously, leave your arms in there for a good 10-15 mins at a whack, like play a xbox game or something. if they're not designed right, they're a pain in the butt.
