Amanita Amerimuscaria question
    #11221509 - 10/10/09 03:41 PM (14 years, 5 months ago)

Okay I have a few things I've noticed when looking for Amanita Amerimuscaria. I took some pictures also. First off I noticed that Amanita muscaria found under different Pines have different sizes and even different shades of color. I'm not too good with tree names so I will upload photo's of the trees aswell. This is the first patch I found buried in the pines, these ones were alot larger and darker shades some even looking red. What I want to know is if anyone knows if this is just a random occurrence or an actual occurrence everytime.

Okay these type of pine trees seem to produce larger and darker shades of Amanita Amerimuscaria:

Now for the ones under this type of pine are alot smaller and alot lighter:

If anyone know's why or has an idea why this happens please let me know, thanks.

Interesting observation.

The first trees are "Pine"
The second trees are probably "Fir".  Possibly "Hemlock".

A. Muscaria can come in all shapes and sizes. I've yet to find the under pines though only Birch.

Yeah shock it just caught my interest. The Fir or hemlock trees produce smaller lighter ones while the Pine produce large orange and red ones. Never really thought I'd see red Muscaria here in America though. I suppose I'll look into it more though, make it my own little study.

I don't know if their growth has to do with elevation, I mean I do live in a Valley. I don't see them everywhere either though I found just one spot where they tend to fruit alot. After a good rain fall there is a good 30 to 40 fruits in the same area.

I live in the PSW but my home is near the ocean waters so its low as it gets but if you travel further inland(up in elevation) you can find em in the rain forest and such.

The coloring has had me very trepidatious of trying them due to that same variance. I found these 2 less then a mile apart. the first area were all very orange/ reddish orange, and under trees as pictured first, the second were under the 2nd shown trees, and like wise, were all much more pale yellow (making me research the last several hours to see if it could be any other possibility.
First location

And second

The large one being held appears more yellow then it is due to lighting, but even given lighting is still noticibly lighter.

Yeah I'm not worried about eating them or not, I was just interested in why some grow a certian way under one tree and a different way under another tree.
