a couple growing q's

i've read various growing guides, and most of them reccomend using vermiculite and "brown rice flower". I can't find the brown rice flower for the life of me. I've read methods where rye is used, and at the store I found "rye flower". I was wondering if that could be used as a substitute? Also, a question on contamination. I don't have a pressure cooker, so I was going to boil water and put a lid on the pot so that it builds up pressure inside. If it does indeed get contaminated, how easy is it to spot contamination? Is it a noticable contrast of color (i.e. yellow instead of white?). Sorry for all these questions... but last i was wondering if the innoculated jars, once ready to be put in an aquarium, can they be spread out so that there is more surface area to grow? Or should they be left in jar form for some reason or another. Thanks for taking the time to read this, i appreciate any input as this will be my first time growing. The whole process makes sense to me and doesnt seem *that* hard.

>>I can't find the brown rice flower for the life of me.<< Go to your local Wild Oats or any health food store (yuck) You know the kind where they sell organic everything, and candy bars that are supposed to be for endangered species. They sell lots of BRF there.
>>I don't have a pressure cooker,<< YOU REALLY NEED TO GET ONE
>>once ready to be put in an aquarium, can they be spread out so that there is more surface area to grow? Or should they be left in jar<< Ummm no, leave it in the jar untill the whole thing is pure white mycelium.
Also as far as contams go, you will definatly notice, they are not hard to spot. Anything that is not white is a contam. IE green, blue, pink, yellow all mean throw the fuck away and start over. hope that helps.

Just steaming them in a large pot seems to work just as good.

rye flour actually works better for me than brf, maybe it was the brand but it was always crap....so don't worry if you can't find the rice

boiling in a large pot is fine for BRF. I'm new at this but have sterilized 17 jar this way without any probs. You need a PC when you start using grains.

- I don't have a pressure cooker, so I was going to boil water and put a lid on the pot so that it builds up pressure inside -
I'm having good results with just boiling in a pot, and the lid really isn't even particularly tight.
- If it does indeed get contaminated, how easy is it to spot contamination? Is it a noticable contrast of color (i.e. yellow instead of white?). -
It's easy to spot, and if there's any doubt visually, you'll be able to tell from the smell when you birth it.

You can buy fine grade BRF here: http://www.mycosupply.com/
Contaminants are usually easy to spot, either by smell or color.
Also, about the whole PC thing. You don't need one (for BRF). I haven't gotten one contamination problem yet with my jars.

You don't need no PC for BrownRiceFlour or Brown Rice... You only need one for grain, or other shit like that
