Basic Psychology: The Pain of Self-Abandonment
    #11221140 - 10/10/09 04:31 PM (8 years, 2 months ago)

This paper says that self-abandonment is about judging your self and ignoring your feelings. You want others to take up the responsibility for your well-being. Not wanting to face your feelings you lose yourself in all kinds of addictive behaviour. And that is self-abandonment.
Because of this ignoring yourself you cause pain unto yourself, which you ignore. Then you demand from others the love and attention that you fail to give yourself. In fact you give yourself away to others so that they can take care of you. This only increases the pain you cause yourself and more addictive behaviour follows to avoid the pain of this self-abandonment.

The way out is to pay attention to what thoughts or actions are causing these feelings. Focus inside your body instead of projecting outwardly. Don't judge or ignore those feelings but try to get their message. Feelings tell you that what you think is not true nor good for you. Ask yourself "What is the truth?"

---

I found this very illuminating. Now i wonder, could meditation 1 to 2 hours daily be a way of self-abandonment? Or would it just be the opposite, namely, looking inward and giving attention to myself? What do you think?

That would depend on the person and why they wanted to meditate.

As to the rest.

When I was young I decided that having emotions was a bad idea. So I stopped. That turned out to be a worse idea.

Repressing emotions doesn't take a god.
