colonization questions
    #11220772 - 10/10/09 03:11 PM (8 years, 2 months ago)

My friend is following the BRF-PF tek. They've got 5 jars wihch were inoculated about 13 days ago and have since been sitting at room temp. When inspecting them we found about 1/2 way down the jars are a bunch of sexy looking white spots about a Quarters size each! Well, they wanted to know if at this stage it is beneficial to shake the jars or not?

Also they wanted to know if the technique of taking off the tape and placing the jars upside-down (lid down) to increase  gas exchange should be followed at this stage or not? They read somewhere that this is supposed to help with release of CO2..

:pm: me if you have questions about lasers

Although i may advise others in a general way regarding all types of mushroom grows, and may even post question from other forums about growing "active" mushrooms, i only grow non-"active" mushrooms and edibles.

How will they know if the colonization is stalling? Do you recommend daily inspections of the jars? They felt like this would be too often and could contamination.

Daily inspection? If you can keep it under 41,000 times per day, you'll be good. :yesnod:

If you can, wait two or three days between checking.

looking at jars does not contam them.. just dont shake them.. shaking them is the worst thing you can do..

the dry verm layer is there to stop contam.. shaking them would destroy it ..

check em every couple of days .. can take up to 4 weeks or more to complete the process..

If I had to guess, it would sound like your friend injected the spores into the middle portion of the cake. Do it down the side, you'll see the growth sooner.

I fail to see the correlation between injecting spores against the glass wall and the center of the jar as a possible contamination vector. Do you have any documentation on this?

LOl it simple if you inject against the glass you will see what you have sooner IE myc or a contam if you inject into the middle you wont know right away.. it is nice to know asap when you have a contam.

its all common knowledge thats why for Pf we always inject to the glass

i never called it a contam vector thats you saying that

Vector: a point of entry or process or action that causes something else.

The way you worded it, I thought you said it was going to have a higher probability of contamination from glass injecting. My bad.
