I don't think he is autistic.

Arthur Benjamin makes numbers dance. In his day job, he's a professor of math at Harvey Mudd College; in his other day job, he's a "Mathemagician," taking the stage in his tuxedo to perform high-speed mental calculations, memorizations and other astounding math stunts. It's part of his drive to teach math and mental agility in interesting ways, following in the footsteps of such heroes as Martin Gardner.

This is real. There are people who can do much, much more than square a five digit numbers, which is a relatively "easy" task. Multiplying two five-digit numbers together for example is much harder.

Dase (1824-1861) was one of the best mental calculators in history. For example he could do 79532853 x 93758479 = 7456879327810587 in 54 seconds. Or

Quote:

[...] He multiplied two 20 digit numbers in 6 minutes; two 40 digit numbers in 40 minutes; two 100 digit numbers in 8 hours 45 minutes. Gauss commented that he thought that someone skilled in calculation could have done the 100 digit example in about half that time with pencil and paper.

Anyone who is interested in the history of the subject should read this article.

Dude, I was hanging out with this guy all day and didn't know it! He was the closing Pleneary speaker at an event I was at today. I didn't recognize him until he did his "racing calculator" thing.

His talk was fucking awesome. He did combinatorial proofs for various well established theorems. It was interesting because not many people prove theorems using combinatorics.

Man I'm glad he didn't watch my presentation...I would felt like an idiot.
