Light re-casing required?? PICS included
    #11219290 - 10/10/09 07:44 AM (8 years, 2 months ago)

Sup guys, I follow Hyphae's pinning strat, most of the time the results are pretty consistant, i cased them with dry straws & wait till mycelium pops out from a few areas, usually 20% to 30%  'along the valleys' i will put them in the FC under fruiting conditions with perlite and a plastic sheet covering the container.

This time i cased them with 'special soil' seemly consisting of bones, potting soil, chicken poop. I read in shroomery that chicken poo are high in N, therefore i sterilized the casing before i use them.

This is wat happens when i cased it post casing, pre-pinning after 3 days. What u guys think? Overboard?? should i lightly re-cased? Please help ^^

This is day 2 in the FC. Again, thinking of a light casing, but thought better of it. Seems to detect some 'knots' or maybe just mycelium? Any suggestions from experts pls?

you have already exposed it to FAE so let it go as is, its knotting so your good to go. :super:

casing isnt needed with cubes.

Thks guys, my apologies, please let me re-phrase my questions. I prefer to avoid recasing if possible, thing is im not sure if the above pics is showing decent mycelium coverage or overlay.

I would re-light-case if i have to though...
Again thks guys for the feedback.

its not overlay, its should start fruiting in a few days.  see the hyphal knots (tiny bright white specks)

Thanks again, Ive decided to let it sit for a couple of days before i do anything.

Thing is, i usually use 100% dry straws for casing. And they will incubate for 3 days after casing pre-pinning. Usually 20% to 40% will be covered in mycelium after 3 days. Like this;

But after changing to 50/50 casing. After the 3 days incubation period, the casing seems to be 80% colonized.

The above picture is what it looks like immediately after incubation before FC conditions....

Looks good to me as it is healthy, problem is i never had overlaid problem before therefore i do not know what it looks like. And this casing gives me an impression of overlaying based on a picture (i think) ive seen before in shroomery. Very glad that one of the experts here didnt think its overlay.

Now, i have couple more casing to go in the FC. Not sure if i should stick to dry straws or the 50/50.

FYI my 50/50 consist of 50% dry straws, 50% special soil mix; made up of bones, chicken poo and potting soil. All of which i sterilized in order to bring down the N in chicken poo before using.

The usual dry straws casing does works all rite, i'm just experimenting with the 50/50 thingy to see if i can get more impressive yield. Problem is i have a couple of casings ready for incubation (already dragged on for about an extra week), but im not sure if i should just stick with dry straws which i know works or change to the the 50/50 thingy?

What you're seeing is not overlay. Overlay is dry and matted mycelium that doesn't absorb water well and fruits poorly. You tray should fruit just fine, but it will be more of an uncased substrate.

Your 50/50 "casing" mix is becoming colonized because it contains too much nutrients. You could use it as a bulk substrate mix if you dropped the potting soil. A real casing mix consists of minimally nutritious ingredients like 50 peat/50 vermiculite with gypsum and lime added.

Oh... and bones?

Thks for the advice man.. I know, the 'special soil' sound kinda weird. Thats why i used about 30% of my colonized substrate to try it out.

Dry staws was giving me decent results.. but im hopping to achive a higher yield hence the experiment.

yup, casing are supposed to be non-nutritious so the myc doesnt colonize it.  peat/verm+lime are the standard materials for casing. if you dont have humidity issues then no need to case.

I have a easy coir bulk link in my sig if you wana check it out just for referance.:stoned:

Casing should have no nutrients at all - just there to hold moisture.

Sounds like you actually added another form of a substrate that the mycelium is now attempting to consume.

Yeap, didnt think that 'special soil' mix would be considered  nutrients for the mycelium. Guess i have to drop the 'special soil' casing thingy.

Anyways, i will post up any pics once i get any pinning action on. Just to let everyone who helped me out have a little feedback.
Should probably stick with dry staws for my other casings.

Thanks alot for the feedback everyone ^^

Nice, day 5 in FC. Pleased with its look, not sure if anyone can detect the very very small pins even if i posted an updated pic. Im gonna try it anyways in abit and will post it

when my trays look like that i generally put about a 1/16th of an inch of casing over the top

Late casing? Ive read about that before here in shroomery, but im nothing close to most ppl here in terms of xp... should i give it a shot? worried about damaging the knots / pins.. but i do have coir & dry staws or more of the chicken shit salad

Another casing, cased with the same 50/50 shit  strangely it colonized about 20 to 40% as usual just like when i cased with dry staws :confused:

Wat u guys think? about both the "late casing?" and the chicken shit 'casing' if i can even call it that.. should i continue using it or stick with dry straws?? or coir even (just managed to get that not too long ago)

casing tek

coir makes for better substrate.

late casing wont hurt your pins but if your pinning then you dont need to case.  casing is to help initiate pinning or if you have humidity issues.

Thks man 13shrooms for the advice & link, gonna try it out real soon, probably gonna use PF cake to inoculate the bulk coir as i have some going on already. Or should i get more re-grow more mycelium with WBS ( also have some in stock) to inoculate the coir?

Just checked out my casing :tongue2: Looking forward to the harvest :mushroom2: but for some reason, they look kinda small :frown: ..... at the moment.....i hope. Gonna post some updated pics up in abit ^^

thks again 13shrooms
