Why do we black out monotubs?
    #11218724 - 10/10/09 02:47 AM (8 years, 2 months ago)

So why are we supposed to cover monotubs during colonization? If you don't need darkness for WBS or BRF jars to colonize then why does the monotub need darkness?

I dont, I just wrap it in clear plastic for gas exchange during colonization then unwrap it and put poly in the holes during fruiting.

my jars and trays and tubs all colonize on a 12 on/12 off timed lighting schedule.:sun:

its called circadian rhythm

its not crucial but its easier to just leave it go and not worry about lighting ever. :stoned:

I'm actually talking about why it is supposed to be covered (like in a black trash bag) until it is done being colonized?

Gas exchange.

you dont want fresh air during colonization just an escape route (tiny holes or just the leaking of air between the lid and container are enough) for the gasses the myc creats when colonizing. then when its done colonizing fully 100% you open it up and give it FAE (freash air exchange) and its a big(er) pinning trigger in combination with full colonization, temps and lights.

Wow!  I've never thought about that even being relevant in Mycology.  That's more a "Biological" Phenomena.

The major pinning triggers are "Full Colonization, FAE, and last but not least Light.  Keeping the tub covered during the colonization phase keeps the "higher CO2 level which keeps it in vegetative phase.  Once full colonization has been achieved, then the lowering of the CO2 levels will begin triggering it to shift from vegetative to fruiting phase.
