Just booked a flight
    #11218155 - 10/10/09 12:29 AM (8 years, 2 months ago)

I'm going to France!

A friend of mine showed me HelpX a few weeks ago, and I loved the idea. Basically I'll be helping my host family with house/farm work for about 25 hours/week, for room & board, internet, etc in exchange.

So I can see France, learn the language, make friends, and learn about self-sustainability. (A lot of the hosts run their own businesses: farms, guesthouses, tourist operations, etc.)

After 3 (+/-) months, I'll be heading to the UK to do the same.

Have you guys done something similar? Thinking about it?

Any travel tips would be appreciated. I've never been out of Canada before. I'm excited and anxious and hopeful.

Well I think a work exchange is technically considered work. So I would need a visa to keep things legal. Or possibly just a work permit.

I'm just going to tell immigration officials that I'm staying with friends/in hostels.

HelpX is a lot like WWooF, yeah. I think the main difference being that HelpX is not only organic farms, but a variety of home businesses and even plain homeowners who need help maintaining their properties.

Most of the hosts appear to speak English. Especially in Europe. I guess it depends on where you want to go. You could always hit up a predominately English speaking country.

Have fun man, that sounds cool.  I have so much baggage I can't leave where I'm at.  But if I didn't I would totally go too!

very cool man.  i work with a french guy, seems like a cool place from what he says and the things i have seen else where.

i'll be going to to india to work on a farm for some one in the future but both of our lives at this point in time do not permit that.  it's not a big farm either, i'd be the only person there staying that wasn't family.  i also have a few other friends with family in a few places.

good luck in your travels

i'm currently WWOOFing in the czech republic.  been on this farm for a little over 2 months now.

it's great

it really offers the opportunity to get an intimate look at the culture.  i feel guilty though, because i got a book on learning czech and haven't really touched it since the first lesson.  curse my laziness.  i just kinda hate learning languages.  so tedious.

how do subscriptions to HelpX work?  with WWOOF you pay a fee of like 10-30 euros for whatever country you want to subscribe to, and the subscription lasts 1 year.  is HelpX similar?  if so, how much was France?

it really is a great opportunity.  you're going to enjoy yourself.  completely change up the routine of mundane you get locked into in your home country.

money?  the only money you need is the plane ticket.  and you'd be surprised at some deals you can find on flights.

Sounds cool mang, I just recently got over here to the Greece area.  Visiting a few friends i've made through my seasonal work in AK.  I'd never been over seas before.  The flight from DC to Paris was hell hehheh, i like it over here tho..i'm in an area thats border line 3rd world, slow paced.. goats roaming the streets cracks me up, kinda freak me out as well

The streets are terrible, corrupt police sketch me out a lil bit.  Make sure you live as much as possible because who knows it could be your one and only trip.

It's 20 euros for a 2 year membership with HelpX. That gives you access to all contact details, reviews by Helpers and Hosts, etc (for all countries available - probably 60+).

I think it's a great investment.

Sounds like it'd be expensive to roam across Europe with WWooF. How long will you be in Czech?

I'm not sure what they'll be OK with. Depends on the host.

I think I'll offer to do extra work for a decent wage. Looks like I'll need the money, anyway, to travel around France. Unless I can scrape up some cash before I leave.

i'll be on this specific farm until the end of december/early january.  though i'm taking a two week break or so to travel and visit some friends in mid november.

after i leave the farm in the middle of winter, i'm just going to try to travel as much of europe as i can, as cheaply as possible.  couchsurf when i can.  stay with friends and friends of friends when i can.  cheapest hostel possible when i can't do either of those.  i'm still working on my itinerary, but i'll most likely travel from january to the end of May.

then, assuming i have enough money to keep going, i'll try to make it back to the czech republic and get another WWOOFing position for the early summer before heading back to the states.
