I.D. help! cool mimosa looking tree

i always wondered what this tree was when i walk by it everyday.  so i took a cutting and am trying to root it.


anyone know what it is? the stem is purple and smooth

It would help if you gave habitat details such as where in the world you're at.  I doubt you'll get an ID here other than that looks mimosoid and is in the legume family.  Looks like you probably took the picture at dusk when the leaves fold up for the night.

i live in southern california by the coast.  this was up my street where it look pretty deserty. ill try and get a picture of the trunk of the huge tree. and no i took the picture at around 1 in the afternoon.  they alway look sorta like that.  i have a pic of the stem on this one tho:

Not a Mimosa that contains any alkaloids, but definitely a cool closely related plant I'd say.

Good luck rooting it!

If that doesn't work try it without rooting hormones and make sure to change the water out!

It is reminding me of an Acacia species in the way the inflorescence is forming. Flower colour?
