Computer question
    #11217208 - 10/09/09 07:09 PM (14 years, 5 months ago)

Hi folks.
This is my first foray into this forum but I'm hoping for some basic computer help.
Does anyone know the combination of keys that you can push during start-up that will completely reinstall windows?
I did it once by accident trying to get to safe mode but don't know what I did.
When I tried to install the Norton anti-virus trial software, everything went wrong.
I'm not paranoid and have nothing to hide but it was all but impossible to log on to the internet without 'them' (norton) tagging along.
I am over 40 and don't know *&^# about computers. I'm not trying to hide anything either.
I'd just like protection from anyone who would wish me harm. If this is the wrong forum I'm sorry.
Just looking for some help here.
Thanks.

Pressing F8 usually gets u to a boot menu with different choices, where there is a repair or restore option.

Usually u need the windows cd inserted in the cd drive tho.

I think it will vary from one computer to the next.  My machine is an HP and I had to do a system restore just yesterday (essentially it reloaded my OS without losing any of my personal data or settings).  I had to hold F10 on startup on mine to get into the system restore function.  And F1 will get me into my BIOS setup.  And I think theres one more I can push on startup for another feature but I can't remember what it is now.

If you have an off-the-shelf machine you could probably, with a little searching, find a list of the startup functions and the keys you need to access them.  Just search by your make/model.

yeah,  i have never actually had to use a windows cd to restore.    Actually I restore mine about once a year.  I keep everything organized on different drives any ways.

500gb for music and dvds, 250 gb drive for games, and another 100 gb drive for pictures and text.  none of these are my C:// drive, so when I do a system restore it just affects that drive and leaves everything else alone.

i like it

Norton does suck!! What a pathetic excuse for a company/program.
Can anyone recommend any free programs that will protect my computer?

If you haven't already formatted the computer, Norton has a removal tool to yank its POS software out, fixes almost every Norton issue I've ever had, specially network related.

AVG Free is good, also recommend Mal-ware bytes along side it!
