Found growing in sand near an old tree. Please help ID.

Habitat-Backyard
Size- 2 in tall
Gills- Close together
Texture-Tough

Looks like a cluster of honey mushrooms (Armillaria sp). Poor guys... never had a chance.

good, i hate them armillaria, all they do is get my hopes up, then let me down...Pound after pound, their abundance is very annoying.

If anything, I feel the same way about Pholiota squarrosa but they only get my hopes up from a distance. Neither look THAT much like Gyms to have to get angry at a mushroom. :laugh:

I found a cluster identical to these at the end of a long mush hunt. Hahaha, got my hopes up, but the texture of the caps and a few other indicators were throwing my instincts off.

Go figure. lol
