Amanita ID, Please and Thanks
    #11216664 - 10/09/09 07:11 PM (8 years, 9 months ago)

Habitat:
Growing singly amongst decomposing deciduous tree branches and dead leaf material.

Gills:
Cream to yellow, not attached.

Stem:
1 to 1.5 inches in length, .5 inches in diameter.  Color is cream on the outside with thick, meaty, and white fibrous inside.  Stem seems relatively thick compared to the cap.

Cap:
.5 to .75 inches in diameter.  Red on top fading to orange near the border of the cap. Texture is soft on the inside, the inner flesh is also white.  Cap is spherical and convex.

Spore print color:
Processing now...

Bruising:
No bruising observed.

Other information:
I can distinguish no discernible scent.  I think this may be the yellow/orange amerimuscaria but I'm not sure.

When you're looking for an ID for an Amanita, be sure to dig up the base of the mushroom and get a good picture of it, most times it is needed to make an accurate ID or good guess at species.

Hard to say without the base, but I don't see a predominant veil

Yeah I tried but could see no vulva from which it was growing.  I probably just didn't dig it up correctly.  I also don't see the concentric rings on the base of the stipe, which I've read is indicative of a muscaria.

possibly an Amanita flavorubescens, flavoconia, or muscaria, but I'm no expert in Amanita identification.

I'm leaning away from the rubescens as I have ID'd many of those in my area.  There is no reddish/purplish bruising on this mushroom like there is on those.

Thanks for the help guys.

Amanita parcivolvata.

When you're looking for an ID for an Amanita, be sure to dig up the base of the mushroom and get a good picture of it.
