Habitat: Here is another Mushroom that I found in a fairy ring under apple/crab apple trees in Upstate NY, Oneida County north of Utica, NY. I found this 10/03/09
There is a whole bunch of them, so I hope they are edible! The spore print is developing, hopefully ready tomorrow if a positive ID isn't made by then. Thanks again everyone!

take pics in its natural habitat, take the spore print on foil, and get some younger specimens as well if possible
to me they look kinda nasty, almost Tricholoma sp or Entoloma sp or something.

I'm leaning toward Clitocybe (some of the all white Clitocybe species are very poisonous, with muscarine) or possibly Leucopaxillus. In general there aren't any good edibles that look like that (I'm not counting white chanterelles - they don't really look quite like that), so you shouldn't bother thinking too much about them in terms of edibility.
Happy mushrooming!

I will third Clitocybe.
As far as separating Clitocybe (most notably in this instance, C. nebularis) from Leucopaxillus (typically L. albissimus), I would refer to David Arora's method of hurling the mushroom against a wall....
If it explodes into a mooshy mess, it is Clitocybe.
If it remains mostly intact, it is Leucopaxillus.
The exception would be an old, rotting Leucopaxillus, or a REALLY hard, solid pitch at a stone, brick or equally hard surface... In which case you will hear a loud POP, like someone hit a baseball with a bat.

Is this a serious response? throwing a mushroom at a wall doesn't seem scientific at all lol
