Is there a Tek for growing Hericium Erinaceus ?
    #11206904 - 10/08/09 10:33 AM (14 years, 5 months ago)

Basically, i am looking for advise on growing Hericium Erinaceus. I want to enoculate the wounds of a live oak tree in my yard, which is the growing conditions that i once found Hericium in the wild. Could i do a liquid culture & just enoc the tree with that?? Or should i do wood plugs & drill into the tree?

I would say plugs would be better, but why are you infecting your tree?  This mushroom grows just as well on dead wood.

The convenience offered by dowels is unmatched.

While it may be convenient, a living tree is better
left to grow other things.

Hericium will yield much better results for you on a
mixed substrate, or rounds partially buried in the earth.

Well, i have read up on the natural growing conditions, in this i read that Hericium commonly grows in the old wounds of hard wood trees. In addition, i once found a wild specimen in the woods growing on the wound of a "Live" ( type of oak tree ), oak, and since i have a tree available with several old wounds i want to try & use that.

It may take quite some time for you to
see results compared to other methods, then
again it may not - could be hit or miss.

Also - just a theory - but won't it negatively
affect the lifespan of the tree?

Coincidentally I've got a very old oak near
my place with a huge aerial burl that is being
eaten by Hericium - last year it grew some
huge fruits - unfortunately too high to easily
reach, but quite beautiful.

I'm using wood shavings from a friend with a wood shop and peroxide!
