I think Gymnopilus, but which kind?
    #11214962 - 10/09/09 02:13 PM (8 years, 15 days ago)

Habitat:
Southern middle tennessee, found on a decaying log (not sure of the kind). We've gotten some nice showers lately, and the temp's been staying around mid 70s. there were 2 of these mushrooms growing right beside each other, though not coming from the same stem.

Gills:
soft yellow, not attached to stem- though all meet at this dark spot where i separated the stem from the cap, gills are close together

Stem:
about an inch & a half long, goes from pale yellow at base to brownish yellow in middle to burnt orange right near cap, hollow.

Cap:
about 2 inches in diameter, orange on outer edges fading into yellow when fresh - after picked it turned to a darker brown orange, rubbery texture - very wet. Also, both mushrooms had blue/green tinged spots on cap.

Spore print color:
yellow with brown/orange tinting

(because i'm ocd when it comes to color)

Bruising:
no bruising was noted after picking, although the cap has some greenish blue areas (which can be seen in pic 2)
*EDIT* the cap has got some darker spots on it after picking. not sure if this is bruising cause its not blue.

Other information:

(after i picked his friend)

(the cap cracked when i pushed it to make the spore print )

You don't need to push the caps to make a spore print, you just leave them there overnight or for a few hours.

Tinfoil is the best thing to do it on.

Your mushroom may be Gymnopilus.  Maybe active if it has green spots.  Check for a bitter taste.  Good choice of color for fingernail polish.  Cigarettes are kind of nasty.  Good luck on your algebra.

I'm going to say not-a-Gym.  Gills are the wrong color, kinda.  It didn't produce much of a spore print (Gyms are noted for being heavy spore depositors).

Transparency film is the best medium for making spore prints.

Camels rule.  :yourock:
