Lions Mane Q's
    #11214499 - 10/09/09 10:50 AM (14 years, 5 months ago)

Hello (again),

I want to get my Lions Mane growing and have an idea using what I do have lying around. This does not need to be a bulk grow, just a bag or two.. then I will decide.

Anyway.. First question.. I have these two petris of Lions Mane, both taken from the same master, on the same day, on the same batch of agar:

The one on the left is fruiting on the plate:

As the one on the right is more a solid mass of fuzz (emanating from the sample)

My question is.. both samples should be ok, right? I am doing another transfer today and will get it while growing a little earlier to make LC. But, these are probably fine as is? See a problem?

.. Now after that is cleared up, I wanted to do two bags. I was thinking of using this pile of oak branches I got from a friend..

basically thinking of making mini logs to fit in a bag, and smashing a bunch up with a hammer to fill the gaps with smaller bits. Maybe use verm as a gap filler as well..? Sound ok to do that, and just squirt LC on it..? Or should I do some wbs spawn, then break that up into there? .. think of something else..?

Do you think the same will work for Enoki?

Thanks!

Nice plates - awesome.

About the logs - mini logs - branches, what you'll
want to do is cut them into manageable size lengths
and then soak-hydrate them to saturation.

Do not pressure cook solid wood, it doesn't work.
Every time I've tried, it actually dehydrates it.
You'll more likely find good success with steaming
or pasturizing them in bags.

Mixing in some filler material sounds like a good
idea - it would probably help a lot with colonization
speed.

Those branches look dead - they should not be used.

Look in your yellow pages for "Tree Service" and follow them around one day.  You can get a lot fresh oak chips that way.
