Capitalism; a love story. *Official thread*
    #11211376 - 10/08/09 09:55 PM (14 years, 6 months ago)

Im making my own thread, and declaring it official.

This movie was shocking, and made me very angry or otherwise emotional.
Being from Detroit this hit home in to many ways to describe it as comfortable to watch.

I was blown away by FDR's 2nd bill of rights. I have a poli sci degree and never was this mentioned in a book or by a teacher.

I was more blown away by this:

Michael fucking Moore got a member of the US congress to say on camera she felt a coup de etat had taken place in 2008 through congress and the bush regime. :puke:

it is time to take matters into our own hands, bravo you fat, goofy looking brilliant man.

the whole movie was highly provoking. Also more intellectual than most of his movies.
Very compelling arguments are made about the capitalist monster.

I haven't seen the film, but I'm sure he also offers a wide array of alternatives. But what good have such alternatives really ever produced? The problem is NOT capitalism; how could it be? The basic principal of captitalism is human freedom, paricularly, financial freedom. Whenever everyone is free, though, you're going to have some people grabbing more for themselves (and sometimes too much) than everyone else.

The problem, in any form anywhere, is and always will be unmitigated power consilidation. In a capitalisitic society, this takes the form of corporatism, which can usually be pretty ugly. But under other systems, like communism, we see facism and statism, even more absolute and therefore usually more brutal than capitalism ever turns out to be. Their attrocities are usually wide scale genocide and total population control.

Corporations and presidents may have created these things as well to some degree, but at the end of the day corporations and presidents are eventually rubbing up against a mob of private citizens, which prevent the acts from ever reaching the terrible magnitude of those perpitrated under communist dictators.

Obviously, I wouldn't advocate for the pure form of either one of these ideals, since both do create attrocities, and would rather see a balance of the the two.

How was the movie.
Ive heard mix things?
I feel im a pretty class orientated guy.
Does it look at other economic theories?
Or does it just focus on the rich getting richer every year?

Sorry I just dont want to shell out 12 bucks to see stuff I've been reading for years.

Micheal moore uses very distateful manipulation of the people he puts in his documentaries, he edits and splices audio to frame things to how ever he wants. Micheal Moore is feeding the "sheeple" misinformation through HALF-truths and the spoon fed masses will never research any of the points any further.

needless to say his views arn't always wrong, he makes points from time to time.

--------------------
“By calling attention to ‘a well regulated militia’, the ’security’ of the nation, and the right of each citizen ‘to keep and bear arms’, our founding fathers recognized the essentially civilian nature of our economy. Although it is extremely unlikely that the fears of governmental tyranny which gave rise to the Second Amendment will ever be a major danger to our nation, the Amendment still remains an important declaration of our basic civilian-military relationships, in which every citizen must be ready to participate in the defense of his country. For that reason, I believe the Second Amendment will always be important.”
John F. Kennedy, April 1960

You like refering to people as sheeple and you've opted out of ratings? Sounds like you think you're better than everyone, and on top of that you can't take personal criticism.
I'll be sure and add you to the official opt out ignore list if you're not already on it.:vaped:

Its a powerful film even tho its anecdotal and is not trying to make intellectually valid arguments.
His movies center around moralistic themes, and when you watch them with an open mind you can usually step back and see hes pointing out something really fucked up and deeply personal to him.

He hasnt said end capitalism. There is a wide degree of education/stupidity in this country and i think the thesis of the movie appeared when the pilot that landed the plane in the hudson saving 100's of people went before the senate. Moore shows the pilot testifying and he starts saying things like "pilots wouldnt want their kids to follow in their foot steps.." ( because they make shit $ and are responsible for so much and so highly trained.)
but as he continued preaching to a panel that was in basically an empty room, Moore dubbed over his voice with Stars and Stripes Forever.

Its like, when ever someone says "black man" just scream racist and nothing they say matters.
Its the same thing with most in this USA that when someone starts saying something critical of the system,
you can just blast them with "patriotism" propaganda and not listen or try to argue without fallacy.

Go ahead, "moore sucks" and all that, just tell me how exactly he isn't making a provocative argument?
Facts aside, i know when something is wrong, and you arn't going to convince me hes a bad guy for attacking
Big business, big banks, lobbies etc. I dont care if he presented it in a way thats disagreeable, he's not wrong in substance.

Also, you cant attack me for supporting him on the grounds that i agree with everything he says. I don't.
His ideas are worth hearing out, and im highly accredited in terms of educational background (economics, poli sci, sociology etc.) If you dont think this movie points to a compelling argument against they way america is ran today, then you are either part of the %1 elite class that bought the ticket to the promise land and said fuck everyone else (doubtful) or you are just brainwashed. We're really, super truly fucked right now, and if your worried about a slippery slope argument against public welfare policies, you need to step back and realize the government and big business have broken the law over and over again.

The elite run the system. They can break any law they want and no problem. :crankey:

The FBI says (according to :A Love Story) %80 of defaults were caused by illegal practices by banks.
the bank can rob you with little worries. What do you think will happen if you try to rob them?

So i ask again, which is the slippery slope? Moore or the American status quo?

except that in actuality it was caused by government forcing banks to
make sub prime loans to people that couldnt afford them, had no down
payment and guaranteeing that government would pick up the bad paper, it
then took an act of congress for that to happen, now the banks have the
money, the deeds to homes and they're reselling them for more than
market value

so the banks are robbing us with the assistance of government... again

as soon as someone gives enough of a shit to record it and upload it
I appreciate your willingness to send tix but paying for the movie
would go against the values and principals of micheal moore

seriously, why wasnt this a widespread free release if this is opposing a
capitalist system, he didnt seem to care if his other flicks were on the net

lol yeah, i forgot where i was...

"what should i put in a gas tank?" got better responses than this thread.

Still MM did a seriously solid job on this movie, way more intellectually appealing than 911, or columbine.
He got a member of congress to acknowledge a "financial coup de etat" has taken over the US government!
Refute that one point convincingly before trying to discredit MM or anything else in this movie.
Fuck me, that shit is amazing! :mad2:

We need to get everyone who approved bail out (the squeal) out of elected office, and preferably charge most with treason/embezzlement.

In the Senate roll cal votes are most common (where every vote is recorded.) However it is less frequent in the house (more than 4x's as many members.)

The truth is most of the voting it done by members shouting out yeh or nay and the leader of that respective half of congress decided who was loudest. I know that sounds fucked up, but thats how it goes. What i find more compelling is the number of rep's or senators that are present for these votes. You can find those numbers with google and a specific vote in mind. just find out when the vote was held and see which elected officials were absent that day. Its fucked up but most of the time only half of them even vote, some that are present dont vote also. there are numerous resources for this info

gpoacces dot gov / crecord
is the comprehensive source for the congress's day to day activity (which lately= what lobbyists have told them to vote on...)

then, when your done finding out who voted for what fucked up bullshit go to
http://www.opensecrets.org/

And see if your politician took money from someone who would benefit...
bet your ass they did if anyone puts the challenge up.

Keep in mind PAC's are ALWAYS mandatory contributions from agents at a certain company.
examples of this are evident when you study the breakdown of donations.
for instance in an oil company heavily supported W. Bush. You will see individual contributions by people working there broke down by their rank in the company. The CEO will donate $2000, each of the exec officers will donate 1800, junior execs will all donate 1500, top managers all donate 1200 etc.

And also bet your ass that each of these people got an amount = to that donation repayed to them as a "bonus" or "profit sharing," meaning the companies go around the law against a business directly investing in a puppet politician by having their employees donate in their individual names. Also notice many dont report their company...

while this is legal in many cases you will frequently see that status as "retired" or "house wife"... now see how many of these housewives have the same last name as a person that reported they worked for the company your investigating. first off you can tell its the persons wife through google, and you can also tell because they will have both donated $1255 dollars as opposed to the man sending $1200 and the woman sending $1205.

Its a loophole that alows corp interests to purchase political leverage. They all do it.

i could type for hours... i wont- most of you already stopped reading.

I mainly just wanted to check how Ron Paul voted on these bailouts, but he already said he was strongly against it so I'm sure he voted no.  And I wanted to see what he voted for on the flavor cig ban.
