Poll: Are you Spiritual?
    #11211142 -

I got the idea for this poll in the Guru thread. Someone made the point that as you get older, you lose this sense of believing. I'm curious if there is a correlation between age and having some form of faith.
Do you have some sense of Spirituality?

That's very interesting, and opposite what I would have thought (My theory was people would never find spirituality if they didn't in their 20s). I'm 21 and was a Atheist up until about age 19/20. Nowadays my reality is a lot more interesting. I think Buddhism, specifically Tibetan Mysticism, is the closest to the "truth". Although I gravitate to a lot of "New Age stuff", such as ETs and channeling, dreams and other divination, and astral projection (induced OBEs) and entheogens.

It doesn't have to be. I didn't mean for faith to have an religious connotations either. Do you believe there is some underlying structure to the Universe, or are we just accidents here trying to cope with ourselves?

The answer is unknowable and clinging to one view point or the other does not effect your daily life nor how you treat others.

I think a big trick to life is being positive. No one's life is perfect, but if you approach everything more positive, the positivity will come into your life. It's called the Law of Attraction.

Coherency, cogency and consistency are benchmarks of an ordered mind.

Doublespeak, babbling, and meandering all over are signs of an undisicplined mind and poor thinking/communication skills.

Which type of posts do you think should earn the most points?

Not "spiritual". I don't find it is necessary.

In the last 3 years a lot of change has occurred. I stopped looking for external meaning, stopped believing in the existence of purpose.

If there is meaning and purpose, so be it. Though I doubt in my mere existence I shall discover it. In the mean time, I shall live my life, and hopefully die in a relatively pleasant manner.

I used to be the typical hardcore skeptic atheist like OC and Icelander a few years ago, making fun of spirituaity and telling people they were crazy, denying all their experience because of lack of proof, but after a while I got smarter and decided to put the theory to test, and guess what, my life has turned into a path of non-stop discovery, each day I learn something new about myself or about the workings of the world. I now understand how I had blind faith in science, and this prevented me from actually experimenting with spirituality.

It's very much like science tells us the earth is flat and that is why we are afraid to venture beyond because we would fall off. It's the exact same thing with the mind. Science claims the mind is only in the brain, so people are afraid, or even refuse to go beyond simply because there is no evidence. Imagine Colombus having the same mindset as I used to have, as a hardcore skeptic atheist. He would go. no way I'm going to America, science has proven the earth is flat so we would fall off.

Isn't it amazing, how history keeps repeating itself and we never learn our lesson? Anyway, for those still filled with doubt, don't be afraid of experimenting, you can't fall off your mind.. lol.

Ive never been comfortable with the word 'spiritual', and I always shudder a little when people label themselves as such, there is a strange sort of arrogance that comes with it.

still, i guess i involve myself in activities some would consider spiritual, such as yoga, meditation, entheogens, contemplation, etc. I just view them as things i do along with everything else though.

Diaboleros, you make a good point, a good skeptic is even skeptical of the skeptics, The truly scientific approach seeks reality, whatever that may be

Maybe you should experiment with discovering what science actually is. Your post is riddled with poor understanding regarding the nature of science. No scientific observation ever stated that the Earth was flat and no scientific observation has ever stated that the mind is only "in" the brain.

I'm just curious how you feel about the psychedelic experience?  What does it feel like or mean for you?  Some of those high doses, or breakthrough DMTs just fuck with my head.  Logic tells me its a "hallucination" induced by a perturbation of brain chemistry, but man does it feel more genuine than anything i feel from day to day life.

I have been using psychedelics for over 38 years. I place a very high value on them for personal exploration. Smoking DMT while peaking on lots of acid is an amazing thing indeed.

But what does it mean? There's a god? We are god? Your brain is god? The brain is an amazingingly complex structure?  The brain fools us all the time? I have never figured this all out and won't.

However I suspect it feels more "real" because it breaks the mental patterns of a somnambulist and gives a peek into the chaos that form is built upon.

Dangers huh, according to some prescription of the good life from others... some humans are different than others, if they still keep their wits about them, overall, but display some of those DANGERS (ha!) its not to say they arent enjoying themselves (and perhaps exuding a personal honesty to a certain extent). Those yearnings to universalize what is considered general health can be really tricky when we go about idealizing them. I guess I just get sick of people applying psychiatric shit like its a golden standard for all... yawnnnn

Often science is the closest we can come to finality because of the rigorous testing the goes into the scientific method. At lest when it's done right, but science never claims to know final truth.

What about things or events that lie outside of current scientific understanding? Would you say that they were impossible or unable to be proven scientifically?  does a lack of scientific evidence somehow damage the credibility of such things?

What things or events are you referring to and how would you know if they exist?

I don't know if the unknown would be impossible to prove.

Well the scientific method may be the best way we can come to consensus on what may be real so yes it does damage the credability of claims without anything but subjective verification.

However it could well be and is likely that there are things that current science is unable to understand or validate the existence of. That's all well and good until someone claims these things exist without providing evidence. This is how snake oil salemen and fake religious and spiritual leaders etc. sucker the unsuspecting out of their savings and such.

I dont think its fair for science to be the standard to which things are held. Our existence is far too subjective and not understood for it to be that way. How is science any different from any other organized religion? It's still worshiping a created god, science itself. We should all just agree that the knowing will never stop, we will constantly be trying to understand this experience and conquer it for the books. Our understanding of this world will constantly change up until the day it ends without our knowledge, i say it's pointless. the great unknown is our only god.

Most scientists do and for them it's anything but a god, it's just a method that is extremely useful.

I really have no major disagreement with your post. If everyone could admit that they are not sure of what they believe then I would be posting here in a very different vein.

Just because you think scientific inquiry is pointless doesnt make it an organized religion.

When spirituality really takes your life, theres no turning back to doubts, you can't even beleive in spirituality yet alone disbeleive it, it simply is

Theres no physical/spiritual world, only spiritual

I feel theres a threshold to pass through for all beings who wake up to the Self
A Bliss threshold, there is a certain height of bliss, that once you touch, your whole life will be devoted to dissolving into it, until you do dissolve into it....then theres nothing left, Nirvana

You see, I find this arrogance more so with people who claim science has the answers to everything, and if you believe in something beyond human comprehension, you are "unlearned".

I think it is the opposite of arrogance to claim you are spiritual. I guess it all depends how you present yourself. The Christian missionary, attempting to convert the Amazonian tribesman, would obviously be arrogant. But you can also respect others beliefs while at the same time presenting your own. After all, we all are finding our own way up the mountain.

Who claims that?  I see people bitching about that quite often here on the forums but have never in my life seen anybody claim that.  I have interacted with dozens of practicing scientists - none of them ever claimed anything close to that.  I think thats a made up claim that mystics use to equivocate.

Indeed is wasn't your quote, it was icelandics. Maybe you should put the old specs back on

Anyways... If you don't mind sharing, What did your 30 years of Spiritual practice consist of? I find it disheartening that someone could devote such a large portion of their life and receive no fruits of labor. I've only been practicing meditation for a year and a half and I have had a few "irrational" experiences. I like to think I am not falling off the deep end, and I am on to something. What was your tipping point to the skeptical side?

Poor choice of words on my part. What I meant to say is that certain skeptics claim scientific reasons to mystical experiences. "Delusions" or "Hallucinations" are powerful words. I don't think the rational ego mind will ever be able to wrap itself around certain experiences.

 Ironically since being less preoccupied by spirituality and meaning, I have been a lot happier. Ever since I stopped *trying* to meditate, and just be, it has been a lot quieter.

Today I shall be going to a place where I exchange time and tasks for currency, then I shall be meeting my girlfriend, and then my Roller derby team to talk about skate maintenance. Yep exciting day, I am pretty stoked about it actually.

What I am NOT going to do is comtemplate the meaning of life...after years of doing just that, I am ok with it.

A dingo ate my baby refers to the Azaria Chamberlain disappearance. The incident occurred in Australia in 1980 - a baby disappeared under mysterious circumstances near Uluru (Ayers Rock). The mother, Lindy Chamberlain, camping with her family, claimed to have seen a dingo carrying her baby from their tent, and immortalised the phrase, "The dingo's got my baby!". She was convicted of murdering her baby but later acquitted when new evidence suggested that the baby was, in fact, killed by a dingo.
