King Oyster pins! My first grow. * 1
    #11210095 - 10/08/09 07:02 PM (14 years, 5 months ago)

Sorry for the crappy pics, my camera sucks.  This was my first grow to dive into this hobby.  I cloned an asian mart king oyster using agar > WBS > Coir/coffee/verm > cased with peat/verm 50/50+ > fruited in a shotgun FC.  I know the bulk substrate choice probably wasn't the best for this species, but I wanted to keep it simple for my first run. Pics were taken yesterday, and the pins have all doubled/tripled in size since then.

I have a question as well.  These trays have been in fruiting conditions for 3 weeks this weekend and I've had some trouble getting them to pin.  One thing I noticed was that the mycelium started to come through my casing layer in slightly less than two days.  I used a peat/verm 50/50+ casing, eyeballed at a depth of about 1/2 inch.  As you can tell from the pics, this continued for about another week in fruiting conditions until, what appears to me as, the casing layer was completely colonized.  Soon after hundreds of hyphal knots appeared on the surface. Is it possible that since P.eryngii can digest wood it could also digest peat?  I was under the impression peat was non-nutritive, but maybe that was just referring to cubes.

If the casing layer was the problem, should I not even bother with one next time, use a different material, or should I increase the casing depth?

Or could the casing colonization be due to high temps for this species (avg 65-70 F in the FC) during the beginning of the fruiting cycle?  I did what I could to drop temps but since it was fairly hot out two weeks ago, 65-70 was the best I could get.  The hyphal knots formed in this environment, however only a few progressed into really small pins and then stalled.  Temps really cooled off here last week and for a few days the avg temp in the FC was 55-60.  It seems this drop really brought the trays to life.  What'd ya think? Any other suggestions for next time?

Thanks for the help guys.

Thank you for the reply ratdog, I edited the pics, so now you can at least enlarge them.

Rh has been between 90-99% the whole time.

Two things that did change though that I forgot to mention in the original post was that I changed the lighting from a 27 watt daylight CFL (6in above top of FC), to natural daylight below a window with the blinds drawn.

Also I think I was a little light on the misting earlier on.  After the trays sat for two weeks I noticed some light yellowing on the myc, which after researching I decided it was inadequate misting.  The past week I've been misting a lil heavier, and that seems to have helped as well.

The main question I have is about the casing layer on P.eryngii.  Is peat not a good choice?  Should I even bother with a casing layer on my next tray?

last year i had my kings outside on the porch in a plastic tub. ambient temps were around 50-60, and humidity 50-80 usually. they did great. i used a traw mix. this year i'm trying a sawdust enhanced mix. i want to see the difference, if any.

yours looks very nice and you've got good pin set.

what are your temps running?

oysters have enzymes to digest just any plant material according to stamets.

i thought the recommended RH % was supposed to be lower..........

might be the reason for the fat stem and small head. or it could have been the light?

any new pics.

Some new pictures from today. One tray has grown a lot more than the other. Temps the past few days have been around 60-70 in the FC. Definite case of small caps, and fat stems though. All of the mushrooms seem to be leaning towards the window as well, so I rigged back up that cfl light.

I found a copy of Stamet's GGMM on google books and looked up some stuff about kings, you're right ratdog, he suggests 85 -90% rh during fruiting.

From what I've read today the fat stems/small caps are due to high co2 levels.  Since oysters are co2 sensitive, and I'm only able to fan 4-6 times a day depending, I'm guessing that's my problem. I saw that it was suggested to just leave the FC lid off, and mist more frequently.

Did a test for the past few hours with the lid off, and rh at tray level stays around 75%.  So I think I'm going to try that with the additional light and some extra mistings for the next few days to see if they shape up.  Sound like a good plan?

it might be too late but try what you can.

i just ordered a line voltage thermostat with a external sensor which i will use as a wet bulb to turn on my humidifiers. it will be 1/2 of my wet/dry bulb hygrometer which will work perfect if i can keep the room temp steady and even. it has a 1 deg. sensitivity so i can be with in 3-4 RH%.

and its digital.

i have some pulminaris growing now and have gone threw long stems short fat ones small caps and so on but now that i have Rh close they look good. i keep the temp at 75-76degF and Rh from 75-90%

when you pick them dunk right after you harvest and work real hard on the Rh%. your 2nd flush will be awesome.

etarded, nice work, I would suggest more air exchange.  I was thinking though that wood makes peat and peat makes oil and oysters digest wood and oil, it would make sense to me that they can digest peat too.

i have inquired about corn based like the bottles but can not find bags thick enough yet still working on it.

Sorry guys, I've been busy with school work the past few days and haven't had a chance to post any updates.

I really like that automated set up you got there ratdog, I might try to make something similar down the road in a bit.  I saw that tek you posted in Mushroom Cult, seems like a great idea for species that need a lower rh than cubes.  Thank you for the beautiful bouquet as well lol.

Mushroomnoob:  Judging from your other posts it seems you're looking for active species, the mushrooms I have going right now are edibles, Pleurotus eryngii.  If you're still interested in a print let me know, and shoot me a pm with your info.  I was planning on trying to take some prints from these new clusters anyway, but since this is my first attempt at takin prints, no promises on the results.

Acorn:  Yah I figured the small caps were because of high CO2 levels and a lack of FAE.  I took the lid off the FC and just misted more often the past few days.  Those original fruits I posted didn't change and I ended up pickin them on tuesday.  Chopped some up and made em into an omlet, and threw the others into some ramen for me and my girl.  Despite being small capped tards, they were still tasty and super crisp.

I was gonna dunk the trays on tuesday but I noticed a few new clusters were forming with better looking caps, so I let em keep going without a dunk.  As you can see, the extra FAE with the lid off worked wonders...

Probably going to pick these guys tonight or tomorrow, try to print a few and then dunk the trays for a second flush.

Thank you guys for all of the help on this project, if anyone else would like a print let me know and I'll see if my first printing attempt turns out good.  I also have some homemade agar plates that have been in the fridge for a little over a month now.  If you live in the US and would like a wedge let me know as well. I'm not sure what the laws are with sending live cultures across borders, so I would be more comfortable sending a print if you live outside of the US, but I'll research more into that later today. I have about 6-10 good sized wedges I could give out. PM me or just post in here.

The fruit I cloned came from a Korean grocery store.  I can't remember the actual brand name right now, but they were imported from South Korea.
