More Gyms - young and old
    #11210068 - 10/08/09 08:56 PM (8 years, 2 months ago)

I found two more logs with some suspected Gymnopilus Luteus that I thought I'd share. They seem identical to the first batch I found:

Habitat: Deciduous woods, growing from dead logs near a stream

Gills: Yellow, turning rusty orange with spores

Stem: Fibrous, firm; noticeable annulus stained by spores

Caps: Smooth, dry, with fibrils

Spore Print: Rusty orange

Bruising: Very subtle bluing on a few of the youngest ones

Scent: Strong pleasantly sweet cinnamon smell

Taste: Bitter

Location: Eastern Ohio

The older batch:

This one is oozing some spore juice pretty good:

This shows some habitat with some of the other bunches poking over the log. A stream is just on the other side.

Here are the young ones:

Out of curiosity and desire to make sure I had the right mushrooms I waited a few days:

And finally, here you might be able to make out some of the bluing - I had a hard time getting it to show up in the pictures, but I think I see some in the bug hole:

Let me know what you think, thanks.

Nice looking G. luteus. Very nice photos.

I do see some greening on the cap fibrils on the pins laying on the leaf.

They're definitely Gymnopilus luteus.

Thanks!

So, after drying I ended up with about 40g of mature and 13g of immature/young mushrooms. I've been reading lots of posts on dosage, but they vary, and I know these guys also vary in potency with age...

So I was thinking about splitting them with someone and doing 20g of mature tea and 6g of dried immatures for eating per person. Does that sound reasonable or insanely reckless?

I think that you'd find that the older specimens are just as potent as the buttons. As far as dosage I'd say it depends on the individual.

You probably know that these reappear for years on the same logs. This year I found 11 new logs in the same area. Add that to the 8 in the same place that I'd found in years prior. All within an eighth of a mile.

Yeah I definitely won't forget about the spots I have found so far. 19 logs in the same area though, that is insane! I will have to go back and check my area more thoroughly now. :crazy2:

Thanks again!
