Cactus verification
    #11209715 - 10/08/09 08:00 PM (8 years, 3 months ago)

I picked this up today, and it said it was San Pedro. Looks like it to me. I just wanted some double checking. Thanks in advance!

Bonus points if you can ID the cactus in the background

San Pedro, seems to be a backberg clone. And in the background maybe a cereus? Or a stenocereus?

Sweet.
Background is not a stenocereus or plain ol' cereus

Actually hes correct, its a Stenocereus, or Marginatocereus
marginatus, whichever you prefer

Damn the people who are responsible for changing the names

Yeah, I wasn't too sure about that. Oh well
The actual label from the nursery says pachycereus marginatus. I didn't know marginatocereus was the same as stenocereus.

Thats why cactus I.D.'ing can be a pain in the ass
Different people in different regions call the species by different names, and the names often change. Just as you will sometimes hear Trichocereus pachanoi referred to as Echinopsis pachanoi. If you don't keep up with current names then your out of the loop, and I don't keep up with them, lol.

Doesn't it have something to do with scientific names merging with botanical names or something like that? I think I remember my Botany teacher talking about that recently....

It's my pops' cactus. He told me it was an organ pipe cactus. I wikipedia'd the common name it redirected me to Stenocereus thurberi.

I knew about the trich being called the echinopsis, but I never really got why. Latin names should never change. Call it whatever you want but when you involve science there should be some damned standardizations.

Pissed me off the other day when I bought some habanero chili seeds and it said "hottest chili known to the world." Just because it's capsicum chinense doesn't mean it's a naga jolokia. Sadly, some people/companies don't even try google.

EDIT: Of course cultivars/strains are different like the pepper example, but still another way to add confusion
