Can I skip the WBS spawn step ?
    #11209285 - 10/08/09 06:48 PM (8 years, 2 months ago)

The outdoor temps are quickly falling and I am running out of time to make sawdust bags to set out in my outdoor greenhouse... I am wondering if I can skip the WBS spawn step and just inoculate supplemented sawdust bags with entire petri dishes to speed up the process?  Would this work with the following :  Blue Oyster, Lion's Mane, Enoki, Shaggy Mane, Reishi?

I was just contemplating the whole petri idea myself.. I just shot up my first bag of sawdust (ever) with LC directly, its been about 2 weeks and a dime size spot of myc. That's all I got.

Make a pocket of WBS in the sawdust bag. Then lay your petri slab on the pocket of WBS within your supplemented bag. Once the grain colonizes nicely (which was already soaked and ready) then you shake the hell out of it and your ready to fly (with one less step).

Good idea!  So what makes it necessary to include WBS in this whole process?  Wouldn't there be enough nutrition in the wheat bran/gypsum added to the sawdust?

the wbs would colonize first (judging by the sawdust bag I did versus the wbs bags.. wbs is faster), then during the shake, spread around a little better.. speeding complete colonization.

Basically yeah. You know how there has always been the issue of just skipping spawn altogether (outside of its nutrional value), well if you have a pocket, either on the side (for LC injection) or on the top for agar drop...it just fires through your wbs quick and then a good shake and bang, your ready to fly. Going like what Herbal Elixer found out...skipping spawn moves very slowly and takes more time then going with spawn in the first place.

Yes.. Thankfully I did 15 wbs bags at the same time.. they have all since been spawned to bulk.. I am leaving the sawdust bag go for a while, just to play it out.
