Thoughts on casing with CCV
    #11208202 - 10/08/09 04:08 PM (8 years, 10 days ago)

Has anyone tried casing with CCV.  I know that casing is suppose to be non nutritive.  Yet ehoung ppl use 50/50+.  Anyone tried CCV for casing.  I know that cubes dont even need casing layers if spawned to the right substrates.

I basically do this when I spawn to CCV- I end up with a top layer of unspawned substrate.

Although i may advise others in a general way regarding all types of mushroom grows, and may even post question from other forums about growing "active" mushrooms, i only grow non-"active" mushrooms and edibles.

You do tubs dont you doc?  You dont frost the top?  so the unspawned sub acts as your casing then

Right. It feels weird to leave naked spawn on top, I always cover it.
The CCV colonizes, but the texture is such that it's "self-casing", it provides a tiny microclimate all by itself.

Any other thoughts on this? I mixed up two 10 gallon tubs of coir, verm, coffee, and gypsum last night but still have about an inch to the bottom of my holes for FAE. I have peat and lime, would people recommend adding this to the top of my substrate? I'm kind of worried my CCV isn't moist enough as it sucked up the 5 quarts of water I pasteurized it with pretty easily and only the bottom of the bucket was really moist. I did spray a bit of water on the top layer of substrate, but it's really thin and hardly a proper pseudo-casing, but I've never cased or used bulk before. Thanks!

edit: should I let it colonize for 10-14 days or so before I add the casing? Or do it right now? Or not at all? I'm worried about the water content of my bulk substrate but would hate to introduce contams somehow trying to alleviate the problem.

Whoops, forgot to come back to this thread, but thanks for the help truskool. And to Doc_T, it was a one brick that expands to 8-9 liters according to the packaging.
