Amanita Muscaria... Dried or fresh?
    #11207992 - 10/08/09 03:41 PM (8 years, 11 months ago)

Anyone who has actually eaten them before, what would you say is the best way to consume them, dry or fresh?

Flavor is always fresh, i like to eat them fresh for flavor, but aminita muscaria also have ibotenic acid in them, wich could be potentialy harmful in larger doses, which unfortunantly could be hard to measure and differs from every mushroom.  For a trip, you deff wana dry them, even though fresh they contain some mucimol, when u dry them, the ibotenic acid converts into mucimol, through a process called decarboxylation, which makes for a better experience. Mucimol is good, Ibotenic acid is bad....(in general)

I know, well I was reading and Muscaria have bland flavor when they are fresh and taste horrible when they are dry. I figured I'd dry one out then and give one a shot.

Fresh and thouroghly cooked, IMO. Thought it was the heat, not the drying, that did the conversion. Anyone know for sure?
