LC test jars - real question
    #11207696 - 10/08/09 02:51 PM (8 years, 9 months ago)

I have 4 test jars, each representing one of 4 lc's that I made recently. All of the jars show significant growth, and were able to recover after shaking (I shook them to see if I could spot any non-myc growth). It has been almost two weeks (like 1.5), all of the growth seems nice and white. The jars aren't fully colonized because they're sitting at about 63 degrees and were shaken at an odd interval.

Basically, I am wondering if it is "safe" (lol) for me to knock up my real jars and get underway.

The conclusion I have come to myself is that it probably is, because any mold or trich would have made itself visible in the jars by now. IE the LC is viable and as long as I keep my procedures sterile, knocking up the rest of my jars before full colonization of the testers is OK.

I would love if some experienced cultivators could weigh in on this. Please no UTSE recommendations, as I have. Thanks everyone.

At that point, I proceed with cautious enthusiasm. I'll shoot up enough jars from each LC to do a test tub or two, and see how that goes.

i say the lc's sound good. as long as nothing signifigant in appeareance has changed in the lc jars themselfs (besides normal growth) your pretty safe.

ive been checking mine on agar plates at higher than usual temperatures for real fast results. if your still uncomfortable try that.

Lc's are finicky you never know until you test. Its like Russian roulette

so do you basically never fully trust LC until you see fruit?

Well I alway test my LC on 1 jar . It could be disastrous if you were to shoot up 30 jars with an lc not tested. Just shoot up a jar with 1 cc and after a few days if its all good clean myc no contams then your good. or you could alway goto Agar

Exactly right. You can get subtle contams that don't show up as green, but prevent fruiting for one reason or another.
So I ramp it up a bit a time, and I don't go full scale until I see fruits. Of course all of my test jars get spawned, so I'm getting continuous progress and feedback.
Even then, I store my LC in separate (big) syringes, and I'll use a few different syringes to do a batch of jars, to minimize further risk.

LC is wonderful stuff if you use it carefully. But it's also the fastest way to grow a bunch of contams.

Thanks Doc, that's definitely not what I wanted to hear, but absolutely what I needed to hear.

Since I have representative jars of each of my 4 LCs (which I did already drain with 60ml syringes and store in the fridge) I was thinking maybe I'll let them finish off for another week, and then spawn them ghetto-casual in some sort of tupperware.

I realllllly want to knock up all of these empty quart jars just starin' at  me so I can get my bulk on. But I guess baby steps is a lot more thoughtful and will probably save me lots of heartbreak and headaches.

Always good to have a hobby that forces you to be patient.

Yeah, it's a tough lesson. If you have empty jars, go ahead and do a batch- but not all of them.
