What happened to popcorn?
    #11205797 - 10/08/09 06:57 AM (8 years, 15 days ago)

I remember a few years ago when I frequented this site more often, popcorn was fairly popular. I even did a grow on it myself, even though I dont remember how it went..

I did a search I didnt see much on it in recent months. What happened, was it determined to be an inferior substrate?

Not sure.  The big thing seems to be wbs, even rye has taken a back seat to it.

WBS is a bit cheaper, I think.  Popcorn is the only spawn I ever use.

Popcorn costs more, at least around here. Plus rye and WBS work so well, there's no real reason to use it.

Also the size of the corn kernel is bigger than WBS or rye...

Does this mean it will take longer to colonise? i thought the more air around your mycelium, the more it can breath the faster the growth rate??
or it the problem in the moisture level?

It looks like it's moving faster, because there's less surface to cover. But that also means fewer inoculation points when you spawn it.
Unless you get in for super-cheap, there's really no reason to use popcorn. It works ok, but there are better options.

A person has used wbs as spawn several times and is going to try popcorn for the first time soon.  They said that they think the popcorn tek looks like less work due to only one suggested rinse and no unwanted grain to remove.  They are looking forward to trying it.  They like what the colonizing popcorn looks like also think popcorn could last longer in storage because they have gotten bugs in their stored wbs before. They wonder if others on this forum suggest giving rye a shot too.

I have found popcorn to be moisture bitch took me several times to try to get the extra water out.  I toweled i then put it on newspaper then let it sit.  Even after this after the pc there was a pool of water on the bottom.  If you are going to use popcorn I would suggest really drying it out before the PC.  So even tho popcorn looks easier it actually has more work involved.  IME

I hit the sweet spot with my moisture content with popcorn I soak for 24 hours then simmer for about 45 minutes, then drain and load I still prefer WBS any day and love it because of the price, and quality much better for spawn then popcorn.

Popcorn colonizes quick and is just fine to spawn from.  With that in mind I will always use WBS from here because like was stated, it has much more colonization points.  Either way works well but when you take a little time out of the equation WBS beats popcorn hands down.

I attempted popcorn a few times and always had the excess moisture problem spoken of above. I had more success when I let them dry for a longer time and added some verm to the jars.

WBS also provides some variety in the grain..
