Times Higher Education University Rankings

I just thought this was funny.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/education/8295336.stm

Here are the rankings:
http://www.timeshighereducation.co.uk/WorldUniversityRankings.html

with the general rankings

http://www.timeshighereducation.co.uk/Rankings2009-Top200.html

Just look at that top 5, want to guess where the rankings organization is based?

I mean they have Cambridge above MIT for Natural Sciences..

I know rankings in general are all bullshit but this one just seems pretty blatant.  The BBC article acts like these rankings are somehow significant.

The only university ranking system Ive seen that I think is pretty fair is done by the Chinese which was made as a goal post for them to accurately compare their perceived university weaknesses.  So theres no fluff to it, i.e the first university they list from China is quite low.  Its generally considered the most prestigious world rankings and is the standard as of now.

Heres by subject:

I guess its just amusing to me to look at rankings for some reason.

Yep.  There is always a metric that will put school XYZ at the top of the list.  Without knowing what they used to rank the schools, there is no way to know how good the ranking is.  Perhaps their system was nothing more than 'number of graduates in a field weighted by distance from Buckingham Palace'.  That criteria would certainly place Cambridge above MIT for Natural Sciences, but it is pretty much meaningless.

Force Natural Sciences school, I have always liked the 'number of citations found in academic journals that point back to papers published by the school' as a metric.  Basically, how many people are using the research coming out of the school in question?

What a list of bullshit. There is a great difference in subscores for the universities I know, while they are basically the same. My uni is in the top 100, but I think its education system is bottom 100 material.

When I was investigating schools I was surprised how little correlation there was between different rankings.  A school that was ranked in the 60s in one would get in the 30s in another.

US world news is one often thrown around the most in the states - but I believe they are based solely off of perceptions.  And they have 'quantum' listed as a specialty under physics, but no bio-physics.   What a joke.

Yea US News Im not overly fond of.  However businesses in the US generally look at US News as the standard so what can you do eh.  As for biophysics they have it lumped in with Biochemstriy:

To Seuss:  The citation index is a good measure although that can be manipulated.  The nice thing about the Shanghai rankings is that they take the citation index into account a great deal.  Honestly their methodology is pretty good overall, better than US News and far better than this London drivel.

Damn my school is in the top 50 on USNews, but it didn't even make those lists!  Oh well, just going to have to quit I guess...
