Just had to drop a class
    #11204641 -

Long story short, school isn't going too great this semester. I have a lot on my plate as far as work and personal stuff I won't get into.

I was in a 300 level History Course that I thought was pretty cool (History Major). However, I couldn't afford books right off the bat and was only able to buy them this week. We had an Annotated Bibliography due tomorrow (Thursday). I sat down and started working on it tonight and realized that this professor is actually a massive dick.

5-7 page annotated biblio worth 20% of our grade. I don't know if any of you have ever done one, but it's a massive pain in the balls. I'd rather write a 7 page research paper. This is graduate (or at least 500-level with research intensive credited) work all for a rinky dink 300 level history course.

Fuck this guy. Now I'm down to 9 credit hours. Graduating anytime soon seems a bit more distant.

I hate when that happens. I caught an F on my first midterm in a shitty intro to communications class because the professor is so lousy during lectures that I had to drop 80 bucks on a fucking used textbook. She sent me an email today to "reach out" to me. If I wasn't already behind on credits it would get hella dropped.

It it makes you feel any better, I'm in the same boat. Well close enough, I took 18 credit hours this semester to try to try and catch up on my overall credit hours so I can graduate on time. And I'm currently playing a sport too which takes up a considerable amount of time, talk about a bad idea.  :banghead:  :banghead:

I just blew $70+ on the text books on Monday, too. Five of them.

Hopefully the fucking campus book store takes them back.

They usually buy them back at the end of semester, but at a reduced price.

There is something I don't really get. IMO, the cost of college includes classes AND books. Sure, the classes are what will get you the credit hours, and get you closer towards graduation. But without the books, you usually can't pass the class, let alone get a good grade.

Why enroll in a class if you don't intend to buy the book by the first week? It seems counterproductive; now you've lost time and money(assuming you won't get a refund).

Actually, I usually don't buy books. I go to class and pay attention to lectures. I ask questions and get involved in the class. Required readings of classics can often be found on Project Gutenburg or on other websites. I've maybe bought books for 20% of the classes I've taken in my entire college career.

I agree with Brennus, a lot of the time there's no real need to buy the textbooks.

Personally, I'm a sucker for annotated bibliographies. I love 'em, they make me warm and fuzzy inside  :hellokitty:

I don't know, I've always used textbooks as a primary source of learning information. Besides, many of my professors design exam questions that are textbook only. Can't really get straight As without a textbook, not for me at least.

Actually i am planning on dropping a course here too. Its a fiction course with required deadlines for rough drafts/revisions and final copies.

I work from 4pm-1am every day and this class is at 9:30am. On top of work and my four other classes i just dont have the time to write and revise 5 pages of fiction every week and can hardly ever haul my ass out of bed in the morning to attend lectures.

Its suck to withdrawal from a course in my senior year, but i'd much rather that then fail it. Plus, with some summer classes i've actually gotten a bit ahead in credits, so my last semester i'll only have to take 9 credits, including my capstone (which is basically my senior project/thesis whatever...)

im taking 17 credits, should be 19 but apparently a 3 hour lab is worth 1 credit here?

i missed a weekend week weekend week and am caught up in all my classes but one. im caught up work wise but im not up to date on all the material, plus one class im still way behind in, discrete structures, i might have to drop, in addition to my chem lab bc 1 credit can suck my cock. this semester sucks, im changing my major and am stuck in these hard Computer science classes i no longer need :/

I just take 12-14 hours a semester, but i never have to drop anything and I make good grades.  In Physical Chemistry right now with a HORRIBLE teacher.  I literally have to teach the entire course to myself, but I get it done...

And you are surprised that you are not doing well? You don't read the book to pass the class, you read it to ACE the class. I have never "not bought the book" unless it was a reading class. For history though? Obviously you have to buy it man. Not the teacher's fault you thought you could slide through college. Its not High School man, realize that.

Dude, I hear you.  I graduated with a B.S. in History and the two times I had to do annotated bibliographies I wanted to tear my eyes out.  I could understand the professors wanting to make sure we were actually doing our research on time, but having to give a full synopsis of every book I was using and telling how/where I planned on using it in my final paper was way beyond tedious.

Yeah, Idk. Professors over here love to create textbook-only exam questions that were not covered in class. I'm even surprised that students don't have the book by the first day of class, I usually read a couple chapters out of every book before the semester begins.

then again, trying to get a 4.0.

You're not reading me here. If it was for one of my 500 level research intensive classes, it would be my fault. But this is a mid-level history course. This guy has the highest drop rate of any professor on campus.

Start out on the right foot, end on the right foot.

But I'm sorry for the OP.  It sucks that it's worked out this way for you.  Hopefully you'll get back on track soon.  Personally, I would freak out if I didn't have the book in hand at least a week before class starts.  I don't see how you made it this far in without freaking.  But that's just me.
