using colonized bulk substrate to spawn bulk substrate?
    #11204393 - 10/08/09 12:50 AM (8 years, 13 days ago)

I have a bin that is fully colonized (wbs spawned to 80/20 pasteurized horse manure / coco mix) and was wondering if I could (or why I cant) use this to mycellium to spawn another (or several more) bins. Contams are the only reason I can think of but it seems that substrate colonization is a rather safe stage of the process. Any thoughts or experience? I have seen some talk about doing this outdoors but it seems risky indoors (but efficient if it works).

as soon as you break up the already colonized sub is when contams become an issue.
the more you make the myc recover the weaker you make it so contams can over run your recovering myc.:crazy2:

I have seen some others try this but havent seen any good results.  they call it super spawning or something. search it.:sun:

i planned on top coating 2 or 3 inches each time I saw thy myc break the surface. The slice the resulting "cake" (which would be 2 cubic feet) into 2 or 3 inch slices...case and fruit. Would this reduce/eliminate contams.

nope, when colonizing bulk you want speed on your side because time isnt.  :sun:
each time you expose your sub to the air your risking airborn contams landing on it with nice fresh nutrient loaded substrate to feed on.

if you wanted a lot you should have done it all at once with more spawn.

more spawn = more inoculation points in your substrate = faster colonization times = less risk/chance of contams growing b4 your myc. :super:

if you cut it up then your really exposing it to high risk contamination.

now dont get me wrong, Im not telling you that it cant/wont work, its just very very risky.:stoned:

just be as clean as you can and work swiftly to minimize your risks.

Thanks. That makes sense. I thought it would work since the substrate was colonized by a single jar and now the myc has multiplied. If the jar had enough myc to overrun the contams I figure the substrate (which has even more myc) would also be able to do it. I'm guessing this works so well with grain because the grain is sterile.

The bottom line as I see it...
Sterile grain to pasteurized manure = fast colonization
BUT pasteurized anything to pasteurized anything = contams

Either way I think I'll try it on a small scale...maybe adding sterile manure to colonized substrate in a glovebox.

I'm excited about a huge cake despite how irrational it may be.

I'll post a pic if it works.

Pro growers used to do this back in the day, it's called active spawning or something like that. It's not used much anymore, there are better methods.

You make it all possible. Doesn't it feel good?

Personally, I would only try it with an outdoor bed so that your mycelium is already 'naturalized'. Indoors, it probably wouldn't work so well.

Stamets advocates using such a method with woodlovers and wood chips - you use a few armfuls of colonized wood chips to inoculate an entire bin or simply replace the colonized ones you remove with fresh wood.

cake as in brf/verm?

then just male a big cake in a large mixing bowl and inoculate on 4 sides and in the middle cover for 10-14 days then fruit it in a martha or shotgun FC.:stoned:

sorry cake was just bad terminology use. Since I planned on slicing or crumbling to bulk sub like i would a brf/verm cake.
