preservation methods? * 1
    #11203858 - 10/07/09 11:35 PM (8 years, 12 days ago)

basically my shrooms have been in the dehydrator all day and are now crispy/cracker dry and ready to be put into glass mason jars! now heres the question- i do not have any desiccant or sicila to put in the jar for when the lids are closed to make sure no moisure forms, do you all think paper would work the same?

no, if anything use baking soda and vinegar, mix a little in an empty two liter and then pour it into the jars, the gas is invsible (co2).

You know they are full when you put a match in the jar and it goes out.

Cap them and store in a cool, dry, dark place for hundreds of years if needs be.

Dry them, put them in zip lock bags, and put in the freezer. They'll last plenty long.

Back in the day I stored some mushrooms this way for six months and tripped just as hard (though six months isn't huge...) The only drawback I have with this method now is that the CO2 is moist from the water in the vinegar. If you have a can of dust-off (canned air) laying around, that stuff is also completely inert. I use that. Also, keep the silica package next time you get shoes  dehydrate it in the toaster at 230'sh degrees, then put it in your jar.

mykologist so your saying you used to use this baking soda and vinegar method and used it for up to six months with no potency loss? and how are you talking about using this dust off as you speak of? i'm asuming you spray it in the mason jar and then close the lid? is it a must to put the silica in the toaster, this does dehydrate it?

You don't need any of that for six month storage. Honest. It's fine in the freezer.
But with CO2 or nitrogen to flush it, and a vacuum sealer, you could store the things for years. Decades maybe.

yeah, i just had a few glass mason jars sittin around that i washed out and figured would work well to store them so that was the plan of action but since i dont have silica to put in the jars to keep the shrooms dehydrated i guess that options fucked, freezing them sounds like a semi-efficient way to go. making c02  is just kinda a pain :headbanger:

One good source of CO2 is some dry ice; typically, you can buy it at the grocery store.

Break off a little piece of dry ice (a small piece of dry ice evaporates into a pretty large volume of CO2), put it in a glass jar, toss in a packet of silca gel, fill 'er up w/ shrooms, and then set the top on the jar--don't screw it down at all or the jar might burst. After the dry ice has completely evaporated you can screw the top on and have a jar full of shrooms with (virtually) no O2 inside.

Alternatively, you can always grind cracker dry shrooms up into a find powder in a coffee grinder and then pack the powder into jars really tight--there's very little room for air then. I like to use baby food jars for this. That way I can just open one at a time as I want them.

why not buy a packet of burrito's or similar low-cost packaged food that uses silica or similar dehydrator materials in the packaging?

beef jerky actually has O2 absorber in it, its iron mostly and they absorb o2 (they rust) but they are great for keeping shrooms

:pm: me if you have questions about lasers

Although i may advise others in a general way regarding all types of mushroom grows, and may even post question from other forums about growing "active" mushrooms, i only grow non-"active" mushrooms and edibles.
