Casing Help!

What are the pros and cons of putting a bottom layer of vermiculite in your casing tray? Will I be in trouble if I don't use a bottom layer when using a foil baking pan for my tray?

I don't use a bottom layer, as long as you don't over saturate your casing you'll be fine without a bottom layer.

Pro: The bottom layer can act as a water reservoir for the myceilum, meaning it soaks up excess moisture.
Con:  Its an extra, unecessary step.  :smirk:

How thick should the substrate layer be, and the casing layer, I hear, should be 1/4 the thickness of the substrate layer? Is this true?

You can make your substrate as thick as you'd like, mine is usually around 1 to 2 inches, and my casing layer is usually around 1/2 to 3/4 inch thick.

1-2 inches skikid??
I can`t even begin fathoming such a thin substrate layer man.
My substrate layer seldom goes below 6 - 7 inches.
Granted I grow with bigger tubs but in general I`d always try to make a thicker casing layer.
More bang for the buck.
I normally go for dung/straw based substrates but I`ll be trying a big grain tub, bulk grain.
Keen to see the results
