Incubation
    #11203562 - 10/07/09 10:59 PM (8 years, 15 days ago)

Howdy folks. I am incubating my jars, but I am having some trouble keeping them at a constant temperature. My apt is around 68 degrees, so I am using a heating pad under a towel to warm up the jars. I have it on the lowest setting just to warm them up to around 75. But there is an automatic shutoff feature on the pad so when I am not around to turn it back on it will go off on me. Is this an O.K. Idea? I just started this around ten minutes ago and plan on checking to make sure it isn't getting too hot. Let me know what you guys think!

yes it will be fine even 68 is fine for colonizing it may slow things down a bit but will still work.. lower temps give u better chance of not getting contams too:thumbup:

I did the heating pad a long time ago.  Big thing to watch with that is making sure it's not getting your jars too hot.  Some of those pads get way too hot.  If the pad is HOT to the touch... make sure you elevate your jars so they are not in direct contact with the pad.  Also, placing them in a cabinet like someone said will hold in more heat given off by the heating pad.  Just make sure they don't get too hot as it will be guaranteed fail.  It's much better to keep them at room temp.

Get a thermostat of some sort, it will save you hours and hours of fussing with it. Then set to a moderate temperate.

I don't like heating pads--they seem like a dangerous fire hazard.

While 68 will work, personally, I hate waiting for jars to colonize at cooler temps. In my opinion, 76-79 is the best.

If you want to incubate them, build a proper tub-in-tub (TiT). Do a search, or check the cultivation section. You'll find plenty of info.

Cheers.

Thanks for everyones advice. If the incubation temp changes, lets say five degrees here or there, as long as it doesn't drop below 68, will they be ok? I don't know if I will be able to maintain a steady temp. Again, thanks for all of your advice. I love this site.

What I mean by this is a constant temperature a must?

They'll be fine with small temperature fluctuations. No worries.

They might even like it better with some variation. More natural.
