Southeastern yellowish wood lovers
    #11203298 - 10/07/09 08:26 PM (14 years, 6 months ago)

Went out looking for gyms today... got my hopes up when I first saw these but they are too small and very abundant. Don't even know where to begin on these IDs

(1)Habitat:Mainly from tree bases (living) and some clusters grew from the ground near tree bases.

Gills: Descending stipe, creamy aging rusty

Stem: The pics show better than I can explain

Cap: Is there anything that might not be visually apparent that I could explain?

Spore print color: In progress but it seems like some off-white to creamy spores dropped onto lower caps.

Bruising: ... I've never seen a fresh specimen that blues but these stems seem to have an iridescence with a bluish tint.

Other information: (It didn't seem to glow in the dark.)

(2)Habitat: Same as specimen 1
Gills: More white than (1) could be a younger cluster of the same species as they were smaller and in the same general area.
Stem:Creamy white and firm

Cap: Convex domed

Spore print color: In progress

(3)Habitat:Straight from tree trunk under mixed oaks and pines

Gills: Close/ creamy

Stem: Pale, Shorter and thicker than other species in area

Cap: 5 cm wide, yellow, smooth

Spore print color: in progress

Bruising: none apparent

Other information: In small groups/pairs from stump.

(4)Habitat: From stumps (all of these are from the same football field size patch of forest and I can't even tell for sure that these first four are different species. All of these are new to me and they came all at once after a couple inches of rain. )

Gills: Yellow... somewhat paler than the caps

Stem:These stems were way longer (proportionally) than the rest of the selections.

Cap:Yellow, 2-5 cm

Spore print color: In the works

No bruising apparent

Other information: These were also clustered but each fruit went into a different direction almost like the image on the main screen of the Shroomery.

(5)Habitat: Up from leaf litter in oak and pine forest

Gills: Chocolaty purple,"frilly"

Stem:Short and stout... weathered

Cap: purplish gray, smooth, but worn

Spore print color: in the works

Bruising: none noticeable

Other information:
Smells sweet and grape-like

I think specimen 1,2,4 might all be the same species (Armillaria sp, maybe Armillaria tabescens), and your last one looks a bit like a Cortinarius sp

Are they worth eating? There are shit-tons of them! Might they indicate the likely presence of anything else of interest? Gyms- might this show that I'm on the right track?

I eat Armillaria, though they kind of upset my stomach.  Not too bad, just a little.

Cook the crap out of them if you do eat them.
