Is smelling your colonozing jars bad?

Im not sure i read something earlier and said a kid like almost died from smelling his contaminated jars.
well all i want to know is, what the hell do they smell like if they are good or bad?
I did happen to take a wiff or two of my jars and they didnt smell mushroomy they smelled just like bad quite sulphury and just not something i would say is good. I can see some mycelium growing and no green stuff like trich.
So thats all.
Thanks again!

I smell jars when I spawn them. But as far as contams, you probably shouldn't sniff those jars.
But if your jars smell bad, they are bad. Healthy jars won't smell like much until you open them.

I think it's alright, just make sure that it's a quick whiff - don't sit there with your nose over it for a long time. Also make sure not to breathe in it, as that could contaminate it as well.
It's a very good idea too whenever handling your jars to make sure that you and any clothing you are wearing are very clean/steryl as to prevent contamination.
Ftw: in regards to the last poster saying non-contam'ed jars won't smell much - I am really starting to think that mushrooms have a disctinct odor that can be detected by some people and not by others. I know that I can smell mushrooms/mycelium very well, it's a very specific smell. However I've heard some people say that they can smell it and others say they can't - so maybe it's like cyanide in that only certain people possess the gene to smell it.

Right. If a jar looks bad, don't bother. Only sniff them if they are pure white.

That's not going to end well... what kind of jars? How did you prepare them? What did you shoot in there?

well ill tell you if i get sick lol.
i wouldnt be suprised if someone has eaten moldy shrooms not knowing or just being way to sloppy and just eating anything lol.
and would it be normal to smell like that if they JUST started to colonize?
Like its barely germinated and doesnt the colonized substrate get contaminated?

If they smell bad, they are bad.
What BRF tek? Sounds like you've got bacterial contamination. You aren't incubating these at 86 degrees are you?

But you didnt use a pressure cooker?
Did you flame the needle then rub alcohol?
Did you work in a glove box or in open air?
Was there airflow in the room during inoculation?
Did you confirm you had field capacity and nothing too wet? Too wet is always contams.
Did you wipe the top of the jars with alcohol before adding dry verm? If you leave the top wet the dry verm doesnt do its job.

But you didnt use a pressure cooker? No i didnt Did you flame the needle then rub alcohol? Flame then alcohol yes. Did you work in a glove box or in open air? I worked in my bathroom after sanitizing with lysol. Worked with gloves on and completely clean clothes Was there airflow in the room during inoculation? No windows were shut. Did you confirm you had field capacity and nothing too wet? Too wet is always contams. Confirming is squeezing and having barely any water come out? I did do that and it looked the same as the RR video. Did you wipe the top of the jars with alcohol before adding dry verm? If you leave the top wet the dry verm doesnt do its job. I rubbed with a clean rag to get the moisture off just like the video.
