Can you smell mushrooms or not?
    #11203429 - 10/07/09 10:42 PM (8 years, 1 month ago)

I've noticed that a lot of people here say that mushrooms/mycelium (when not contaminated) doesn't seem to have any odor at all, and a lot of others state that it has a rather distinct odor, unlike many others. For this reason I've theorized that some people may be able to smell it while others can't.

So can you detect a specific odor to mushrooms or nay? And if so, what does it smell like to you?

Personally I most-certainly can and it is a rather distinct smell - I can recognize it from other smells and actually oftentimes if I'm mushroom hunting I can smell it when walking around, and thus I get to use my nose a little bit when hunting

Each species, in my experience, has a different signature scent for its mycelium.

I've long been able to identify species in my collection by scent.  I used to label culture slants with a sharpie and after a year or so, the markings would have rubbed off.  I can identify three of my shiitake strains from each other by scent, as well as maitake and oyster, cubensis, reishi and a few others that I use a lot.  Each species has a distinct signature, and with many species, individual strains can be distinguished.

I also make it a point to sniff each and every grain jar for contaminants before doing a grain to grain transfer, and this reinforces what healthy mycelium for that species should smell like.

Pigs and dogs have been trained to hunt specific wild mushroom species by scent.

I cant think of any other thing around that smells like mushroom myc.

the most noticable for me are woodlovers and cubes.  I can smell them from 20-30+ft away easy.

if I smell that smell then their is a mushroom/myc colony around somewhere.

to me, very noticable.:crazy2:

Everything has a smell.  Your poll is kind of invalid since you stated your belief before people could vote, which will certainly influence them, and you have no STAL option.

Well I've heard from people esp. on this forum that mushrooms/mycelium don't seem to have a smell that's why I was wondering. I can smell em but I'm wondering if there are people who can't - much in the same way as some people can't smell cyanide while others can.

I love the the scent of mycelium.  It, in my opinion smells better than the fruits themselves.

I love the smell of oyster mycellium, it's sweet with a hint of almond. I almost ate a 1/4 pint cake cuz their like living marsh-mellows.

When I used to dabble with cubensis the smell was very poo/earthy, not quite to my liking. But to each there own.

Mushrooms smell gooood. Although i think im a bit too inexperienced with them to be able to tell the difference between 2 different mushrooms. Although liberty caps i think always smell quite earthy and natural where as dried subalteatus smell like ass.

Agreed with the smell of oysters. I love the smell of oyster mycelium.

I always felt that P. Cubensis mycelium had that classic 'fresh mushroom' smell. Maybe it's because it's the first species I grew and I remember birthing my first PF Cakes.

I think it is highly unlikely that people wouldn't be able to smell mushrooms.  As with most living things they excrete a diversity of chemicals that our noses can detect.  Unlike cyanide which is a single chemical receptor.  Some people might just have a poorer or more acute sense of smell.

On that note, I couldn't miss the smell of mycelium when I opened my first jar.  It filled the room and me with joy.:mushroom2: :dancer: :mushroom2:

I've found it quite beneficial to be able to identify common contaminates by their distinctive odors.

Like RR, I always give my healthy-looking grain jars a good sniff before spawning, and have saved myself from spawning a contaminated jar on many an occasion.

I've gotten to where I can smell the presence of green mold or bacteria in my monotubs well before either is visibly present, which is pretty handy. It's saved me a lot of trouble in the long run, but I guess it just comes with experience.

I've also become highly allergic to mushroom spores from prolonged exposure, which can make things difficult at times.

I've walked into a closet with three monotubs in it before and knew one of them had been infested with trich as soon as I opened the door.

Sense of smell is pretty important in this hobby.

Of course it has a smell, but you have to be trying to smell it.

I find that generally mushrooms and myc smell quite strong.  But I always smell things that other people don't.

Then how do you explain the adjective, "odorless?"  Some odors are not detectable by the human nose rendering them, for all practical purposes, odorless.  That would include some mushroom species.

Mushrooms all have different odors, the farinaceous scent of cubes is common to mushrooms, especially the basidiomycetes. Probably due to metabolism, resident bacteria/microorganisms, etc.
