Wild King Oysters!?
    #11198279 - 10/07/09 01:04 AM (14 years, 5 months ago)

These were growing under some oak trees in the back yard growing in very rich natural humus. I grow king oysters commercially so I am wondering if some spores came home on me and settled back there.

The only strange thing is these mushrooms have pink caps. It may be hard to see in the photo but the color is pink rather than the regular greyish caps that we grow.

Any ideas?

They remind me of a Hygrophorus species.  Or maaaaybe a Clitocybe.

Check and see whether they are growing directly from buried wood or not.

Just soil and leaf litter, a few twigs but nothing substantial or myceliated.

Okay, then they are definitely not Pleurotus, and most likely they are Hygrophorus.

Thanks for the input. Russula or lactarius was my first instinct after king oyster.

Many Clitocybe have muscarine in them, so you shouldn't risk it.

Okay.  What clues you in to Clitocybe (rather than Hygrophorus)?

Lol, I too thought of Lactarius torminosus when i saw them. But I knew they werent because the stipes were too fat and they werent under a Birch (they dont have to be but its likely they would be). And I haven't came across and studied any of the other species listed yet because im new to hunting.

edit: Man those gills look EXACTLY like the gills on the Bearded Milk Caps I found (but i know they arent), even down to the way the bugs ate on them and everything lol. I dont see any evidence of a fuzzy veil around the margin though, that can probably go with age though. Btw you should try to get a spore print off it, that would help with ID.

edit again: Oh yeah im stupid, if it was lactarius that small capped one wouldnt be opened yet and would have a fuzzy veil over the gills still. Btw the word your looking for instead of "myceliated" is "colonized".

Looking in the book, i now see that these are probably clitocybe or hygrophorus as the TI's said, and i guess a spore print wont really help seeing that they both have white prints :/(thats why they didnt already ask :P)
