a question about psilocybe semilanceata...
    #11201452 - 10/07/09 05:47 PM (8 years, 15 days ago)

Can someone explain to me(hopefully with a bit of science behind it) why psilocybe semilanceata grow in autumn, and not when the wheathers exaclly the same, but earlier in the year (spring).

That is a great question that applies to most mushrooms.

Although we have all observed this phenomenon, there are so many potential factors that we are not aware of or are unable to detect, that it is hard to isolate a cause or causes.

Unfortunately, I do not have a good answer for you.

I guess it has to do with a vegetative phase it is going through. It's apparently not the same for all species. Some occur in Spring and Fall. Obviously this is not the case with P. semilanceata. There needs to be an extended warm period where the mycelium grows and taps into new sources of nutrients. P. semilanceata can't go from more or less dormant state (during the cold winter months) to the fruiting stage right away. Once the temperatures are right, the mycelium starts to spread and does so all through Spring and way into Summer. The more moist it is the better, especially for P. semilanceata, which loves pastures around moors, lakes and marshland. Once the temperature drops below a certain temperature for a certain period of time (what you achieve through cold shocking when growing cold climate species indoors) the fruiting is triggered and hyphal knots are formed which will grow into pins and eventually mature fruit bodies.
I am aware of the fact that I cannot answer your question about why this vegetative phase is actually needed sufficiently, but it seems to be a fair guess to assume that it actually is.

I understand the vegetative stage pretty well, I'm a Gardener. Your explanation makes perfect sense to me, and now you have said it, annoyingly obvious  . Thanks for your time

it's always seemed a miracle to me they exist at all,  with such a narrow window and precise conditions for fruiting.
That window is starting later year on year in the UK.

You will find them in the uk before spring warms up too much. (in comparatively tiny numbers)

Because modern institutions depend on the transmission of a certain world view and then willing acquiescense in the truth of that world view by the populations into which it is being exported.
In other words a kind of cultural brainwashing is necessary for modern cultures to work at all.
The consequences of the acceptance of this situation of brainwashing is further acceleration toward catastrophe."
