can you help me identify these....I found in cow pasture.  Specifically on cow patties.  They have slender, brittle brown stems.
Some of the stems are too dark to determine if they are bruising.  The caps are grey metallic looking.  The gills are dark grey to black.  We found cubes in the same field.

Ahhh, panaeolus species, most likely pan. foenisecii. A spore print would help.

Definitely a Panaeolus species.
Though Panaeolina foenisecii does not grow directly from manure, and the dark gills and stature of these mushrooms are not right for Foes.

A spore print will not help narrow it down to species, in this case.

Some of them look Cope-ish.

The ones that someone is picking in this picture look very cope-ish.

Some of them look like copes to me. Especially the ones that the stems have darkened. The picture of the one with a split stem with no darkening looks like a foe. Someone with more experience should give their 2 cents worth.

Eh, the bluing is the key indicator.  Many species of Panaeolus look very similar.

These could be Panaeolus cyanescens if you can make out very distinct bluing.  I cannot tell from the images if the damaged areas are just dark or actually blue.

Another possibility is P. papilionaceus var. parvisporus.

Cap top left (and base of stipe) and stipe top right looks like they could be copes. The others in that pic look more like mangled Panaeolus antillarum.

thank you for your input, I am doing a spore print now and will post results later....what would I be looking for in the spore print?
Also are any of the panaeolus poisonous in case some of them get mixed in?

There are no poisonous Panaeolus. In fact, there are no known poisonous mushrooms with a black spore print as it were. That's what you are looking for, a jet black spore print, which they'll undoubtly have if they are all Panaeolus.

Yes, I noticed that.  However, based on these images, I cannot tell for sure that those bruises are actually blue...  And if the collectors can't tell if they are blue or not, with the mushrooms in hand, then I cannot definitively say that is blue in those photos.

Agreed. Some clearer images would be nice.

I can see the bluing in about 5 of them....the rest, have same cap color and shape but the stems are brown...can't see any bluing at all.  Those are also more metallic looking on top.  The stems also tend to be drier/brittle.

Okay!  The blue ones are Panaeolus cyanescens, and the metallic ones that don't blue are P. papilionaceus var. parvisporus

You want the bluing ones.  The metallic ones are either not active, or so weakly active that they are not worth your time.
