and as for type any thing with a lot of millet and next to no sunflower seeds you will want to skim those off the top when you soak them.

It can be tricky to get WBS to come out like rye. You may have to practice or add verm.

i have never used rye but my wbs looks like the rye jars from RR's video. i just washed it real well. and dry like his video. when you said you want it to look like rye did you mean clean looking with no sticking?

I just grab whatever WBS is cheapest.
I rinse with hot tap water a few times until the water is ‘clean’. Then soak it in hot tap water for 24 hours. After 24 hours I rinse, rinse, and rinse, remove the floaters, then let strain till none of the WBS sticks to my hand. Then I load the jars and PC for 90 minutes at 15 psi.
After it’s inoculated and colonized at 30%, shake it to distribute the mycelium, let it fully colonize, shake it up again and spawn to a substrate of your choice. If it don’t break up completely I use a sterilized fork on the bigger pieces.

My steps to perfectly moisturized WBS 1. Wash bird seed thoroughly until runs clean, pick out nasty sticks. Leave the sunflower husks. 2. Bring enough water to cover your seed to 180 degrees on the stove, shut off the burner and dump your bird seed into it. 3. Let soak for 12 hours.
I have found that simmering the WBS after soaking causes too many kernels to explode making for sticky jars. By soaking in the hot water it will expand and I have not seen a broken kernel since. I also get about 75% expansion so I only use 1.75 cups of WBS per quart jar.
