PF Tek to bulk questions.
    #11200744 - 10/07/09 03:40 PM (8 years, 12 days ago)

Adding a colonized cake to a 5050 verm coir, is called spawning to bulk right? My terms arnt complete.

Do I add the cake after the 1 week consolidation time, or directly at the 100% coverage?

Whats the best way to store the "bulk?" for colonization?

How long does the colonization of bulk take?

Do I mean casing? whats the difference?

5-14 days      usually
casing is what you add to the bulk if you want not nesisary for all species

dehydrated? soo crumble the cake and put it right into some loose coir? I have a bag of loose coir... should I put it in something that has been sanitized or should I just dump it right into the bag? Its an  old bag, been sitting next to the gecko tank for probly 6 months or better...

coir, is a bulk spawn material because it contains nutrients. you hydrate the coir to field capacity and break up the cake into the spawn material then cover it and let conlonize just like the cake.

depending on your colonized spawn to coir ratio it can take as little as two weeks for the bulk material to colonize.

in general the 1 week consolidation time is mainly for bulk substrates and not so much for cakes

once fully colonized you add the hydrated verm to the top of the colonized substrate for a casing layer.

casing is a non nutritious layer on top of the substrate that adds a beneficial micro-climate and source of water for the pins

coir only needs to be pasteruized.
take a 5 gallon bucket or whatever available, break up the coir, boil about 6-8 quarts of water (depends on the amount of coir), then dump the boiling water onto the coir and stir until it cools.

field capacity is when you give the coir a good squeeze in a fist and only a few drops comes out

ya, that is just casing. it gets decent results. but for cubes not much more benefit as opposed to just dunking the cake in water and rolling it in verm

these came from a crumbled and verm cased brown rice cake just this morning
